PhD Scholarship Position in Structural Biology of Viruses at Technical University of Munich

Technical University of Munich, Germany is inviting applicants to apply for a PhD position in biochemistry. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for four years in Germany. Applications will be evaluated on a continuous basis.

Our group uses NMR Spectroscopy as a technique to study the organization of large biomolecular assemblies. Our central research topic is the human Hepatitis B virus – one of the most common pathogens afflicting humans worldwide. In this project, our goal is a better understanding of the prerequisites for the envelopment of the Hepatitis B virion. The position is embedded within the DFG-funded Transregio 179 on viral hepatitis, an inter-disciplinary research network between Munich, Heidelberg and Freiburg.

The position is open to candidates having a M.Sc. or equivalent degree in (bio)chemistry, biology or related fields. Your work will involve an integration of biochemistry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (spectroscopy scholarships) and electron microscopy as well as computational approaches for structure determination. Previous experience in any of these fields is beneficial but secondary to commitment and a keen interest in learning these techniques.

You will join a young and emerging research group and become part of a multi-disciplinary collaboration with medical scientists at TUM Medical Department (Klinikum Rechts der Isar) and virologists at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ Heidelberg). More information can be found on our website Your work place will be the Bavarian NMR center in Garching, a brand new research building with excellent facilities for biochemistry (biochemistry scholarships) and NMR.

Doctoral candidates will be employed by TUM (65 % TV-L E13) for a total duration of four years and will be enrolled in the TUM Graduate School receiving a structured doctoral training ( Active participation in research and networking activities of the Transregio 179 is an integral part of the thesis work.

TUM aims to increase the proportion of women and thus encourages woman researchers to apply. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given priority consideration given comparable qualifications.
