PhD Scholarship Position in Quantum Thermodynamics / Quantum Transport

International students are invited for a PhD scholarship in nanotechnology at Chalmers University of Technology. This position is available for four years. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before February 28, 2020.

Information about the research

Quantum transport in nanostructures is a topic with a strong focus at Chalmers, involving several departments and research groups in theoretical as well as experimental physics. The theoretical physics group, in which the position is offered, is part of the Applied Quantum Physics Laboratory at the Department ofMicrotechnology and Nanoscience and is to a large extend financed within the Wallenberg Academy Fellows program and by the Swedish VR. We are working on charge and heat transport in interacting, nonequilibrium nanostructures, focusing on the thermodynamic properties of these systems, but also on their response to time-dependent driving, which can be caused, e.g., by repeated switching or high-frequency irradiation. Our current efforts are directed to the analysis of nonequilibrium aspects of nanoscale systems, in particular in hybrid setups, where electronic, photonic, and optical degrees of freedom are coupled to each other. This is of interest both for a detailed analysis of quantum transport properties, but also for the operation of nanoscale non-equilibrium thermodynamic machines.

The PhD position is offered in this research framework. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with theoretical and experimental groups working in the field.

Major responsibilities

Your major responsibility as a PhD student is to perform research in a research group, while getting familiar with different theoretical approaches. You are equally expected to develop competence in communicating your results in written and oral presentations. The position may at a later stage also include supervising master’s students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is a stepping stone for future research duties within academia as well as in industry or the public sector.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is expected to be installed for four years.

To qualify for the PhD position, you must have a master’s level degree in physics; the degree should generally not be older than two years. We wish you to demonstrate good potential within research.
