PhD Scholarship in Chemical Engineering at Monash University

Monash University, Australia is inviting applicants to apply for a PhD position in electrochemistry. The funds for this fellowship are available for 5 years. Potential candidates should apply before March 30, 2019.

Expressions of interest are sought from outstanding candidates for PhD study in Chemical Engineering.

An attractive annual scholarship of $32,000 AUD (for 3.5 years) is available for a PhD student to conduct research on the development of a flexible energy storage system for IOT applications. The research will be conducted in Dr. Parama Chakraborty Banerjee's group in the Department of Chemical Engineering.

The world wide IoT market is expected to grow to $ 6.5 trillion in 2024. In this context, high-performance power sources with aesthetic diversity are indispensably needed as a key-enabling technology. Printed batteries have recently emerged as a much-needed solution to address this issue. Printed batteries are fabricated through simple, low-cost, and scalable printing processes. Their salient features include various form factors, shape conformability, and monolithic integration with devices of interest. Recently there has been a huge commercial and academic interest in printed batteries with particular focus on (i) the design of battery shapes and configurations, (ii) synthesis of battery component inks with tuneable rheological properties and electrochemical performances, and (iii) adoption of suitable printing techniques. In this project, we aim to develop a flexible fully printed battery system that can be easily integrated with various electrical circuitries.

Dr. Parama Chakraborty Banerjee's group has extensive expertise in printed energy storage systems, and will conduct this project in collaboration with renowned energy storage experts as part of an Australian Research Council- Industry Transformation Training Centre (ARC-ITTC) program. A strong background and interest in materials science, electrochemistry and fabrication are highly desirable. Applicants must show excellent communication and inter-personal skills, and the ability to conduct self-motivated research. International applicants should have Masters Degree in the relevant research areas and have a record of publishing their research in mainstream scientific journals.

Note: applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.
