Postdoctoral Postdoc Position in Cosmogenic Isotope Geochemistry and Antarctic Glacier Change

Applicants are invited to apply for a postdoctoral position in earth sciences at Imperial College London, UK. The deadline for applying is August 02, 2020.

We seek applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to be part of the NERC-NSF International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, ITGC (https://thwaitesglacier.org), which is a joint UK-US $25M research program aiming to significantly improve our understanding of the future evolution of the massive Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica and its likely contribution to sea level change in the coming decades and centuries. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved with over 100 scientists working together in one of the most rapidly changing regions of the world by joining the Geological History Constraints on the Magnitude of Grounding-Line Retreat in the Thwaites Glacier System (GHC; https://thwaitesglacier.org/projects/ghc) project team. The project will be based in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering, Imperial College London, South Kensington, and we will work closely with colleagues at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). The candidate will work with Dylan Rood (Imperial), Joanne Johnson (BAS), Brent Goehring (Tulane University) and Greg Balco (Berkeley Geochronology Center) to develop and apply new cosmogenic isotope exposure dating and modelling techniques. These new techniques will be used to apply cosmogenic isotope exposure dating to understand changes in the thickness and grounding-line positions of glaciers within the Thwaites system during the late Holocene period.

We will develop laboratory, analytical, and modelling approaches to understand exposure-burial histories for the Thwaites glacier system using multiple cosmogenic isotopes, including for unique, small-mass, low-concentration samples from sub-ice bedrock cores. Ideal candidates will have completed, or be close to completing, a PhD in a quantitative subject and have some experience of laboratory methods used in cosmogenic isotope geochemistry. Candidates with a background in the Earth Sciences, Geography, Physics, Mathematics, and other quantitative subjects, are particularly encouraged to apply.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range 35,477 – 38,566 per annum

The College is a proud signatory to the San-Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), which means that in hiring and promotion decisions, we evaluate applicants on the quality of their work, not the journal impact factor where it is published.
