PhD Scholarship in Odontological Science Systemic Disorders and Periodontitis

Applications are invited for a PhD position in diabetes to join University of Gothenburg, Sweden. The funds for this fellowship are available for four years. Candidates are welcome before August 05, 2020.

The PhD education in Odontological Science comprises carrying out a scientific project and completing at least 30 credits of courses at third-cycle level. The doctoral student must also write a scientific compilation thesis or monograph corresponding to at least 120 credits. For more information about third-cycle studies at Sahlgrenska Academy, see

Project: Cardiometabolic disease (CMD) represents a cluster of disorders including high blood pressure, elevated fasting blood glucose, dyslipidemia, abdominal obesity, and elevated triglycerides that together may progress to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The bi-directional link between systemic and oral health is biologically plausible and a pathway is discussed by which severe generalized periodontitis may contribute to systemic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. While a substantial number of studies have addressed associations between diagnosed systemic conditions and periodontitis, there is limited information on the periodontal status of patients at risk for CMD.

The aim of the present project is to evaluate whether patients at high risk for CMD (HRP) differ from patients at low risk (LRP) in terms of periodontal status. The project is based on cross-sectional medical data of 400 (200 HRPs & 200 LRPs) adult subjects (risk assessment based on subclinical coronary atherosclerosis) and a cross-sectional dental examination. These examinations will include a structured interview and clinical/radiological assessments evaluating (i) oral health-related quality of life, (ii) dental status and (iii) the presence/extent/severity of periodontitis. In four separate studies, we want to address whether (a) HRPs present with a lower number of remaining teeth when compared to LRPs; (b) prevalence, severity and extent of periodontitis are more pronounced in HRPs; © systemic biomarkers of inflammation correlate with the presence, extent and/or severity of periodontitis; (d) oral health-related quality-of-life is associated with risk for CMD and (e) HRPs can be identified by periodontal status. The PhD student will be part of an active research group and is to participate in the recruitment of patients, in the clinical and radiographic examinations and in data analysis and presentation. Third-cycle studies are equivalent to four year full-time and lead to a Degree of Doctor. Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their studies. Those appointed to doctoral studentships may, however, work to a limited extent with educational tasks, research and administration (departmental duties). Before a PhD degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20 per cent of a full-time post.

1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification 2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or 3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden (Sweden scholarships) or abroad for third-cycle studies in Odontological Science if he or she: has successfully completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies

In selecting between applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements, their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies shall be taken into account. The assessment shall attach particular importance to documented qualifications for:

– specific knowledge and skills within the subject area and related research fields – experience of scientific theory and relevant research methodology – scientific analysis and presentation verified through thesis, degree project, scientific journals or the like. It is desirable that the applicant has a background in a dental profession (dentist, dental hygienist) and has experience in handling patient file systems commonly used within Swedish dental care. Documented experience in statistics and statistical software is of merit. The project requires that the doctoral student master (master scholarships) the Swedish language in speech and writing as the data collection involves contacts with informants who speak Swedish.

After admission to third-cycle studies you will be appointed to doctoral studentship. Regulations for employment of doctoral students are given in SFS 1993:100. The initial appointment may apply for no longer than one year. An appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. A person may be appointed to a doctoral studentship for a total of eight years. The total employment period may, however, not exceed the time corresponding to full-time third-cycle study for four years.
