PhD in Advanced Dynamics of Gas Turbines Long Rotors and Complex Rotor-stator Interactions.

Applications are sought for a PhD position studying the dynamics of next-generation gas turbines at the University Of Nottingham. The position emerges within the Gas Turbines and Transmissions Research Centre (G2TRC) at the University from collaborative work done with Rolls-Royce plc for >20 years. The successful applicant will work within a well-established research group comprising ~50 members at any one time.

The study will address the special challenges that emerge relating to building and operating relatively long rotors that are themselves assemblies of multiple parts. It will also dedicate some time to investigating suspected problematic vibration phenomena where deflection patterns in subsections of the stator rotate at a speed equal to the forward rotational speed of the rotor.

Candidates should preferably be UK (UK scholarships) citizens but applications may be considered from top quality graduates from the European Union. The restrictions of the funding supporting this work are such that applications received from candidates born outside of the EU member states cannot be considered.
