Natural habitats for wildlife have significantly decreased in the modern intensely farmed and exploited landscape. Because of this the private, urban garden spaces can today provide important refuge and havens for various species. Insects and other organisms that occupy these habitats also provide important ecosystem services in the gardens, such as pollination of fruits, berries and vegetables, and some species can act as natural enemies of certain pests. The problem is that many private garden spaces today also contain various different toxic chemicals and pesticides (pesticides scholarships) used by the garden owners for different purposes. These chemicals could affect both the natural species that live in the garden as well as the health of the garden keepers.

The overall objective of this interdisciplinary project is to increase our understanding of the risks and effects that emerge from chemical use in urban garden spaces. Specific knowledge about the risks for both wildlife and humans remains unclear, also which chemicals are used.

The PhD student will be responsible for carrying out field studies and lab-based biological/chemical experiments, as well as conducting surveys, analyzing data, writing scientific articles and communicating results. The scientific articles will subsequently be complied to a doctoral thesis.

The overall goal is retreive information and knowledge necessary to promote more sustainable urban environments; increase biodiversity (biodiversity scholarships) and ecosystem services; and reduce risks for animals and human health from the use of chemicals. Communication of results to the municipality, the public and stakeholders is also a required part of the project.

We are looking for a highly motivated and communicative person with a Master's degree or equivalent (including a degree project of 30 credits or more), in any one of the subjects biology, molecular biology, chemistry or environmental sciences.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998:80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships.
