Epsrc I-case Studentship with Esi Group Resin Injection for Composites Manufacturing Under Uncertainties

The University of Nottingham, UK is inviting applicants to apply for a PhD position in applied mathematics. This position is available for four years. Potential candidates should apply before August 30, 2020.

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship supported by the EPSRC I-CASE and ESI Group (https://www.esi-group.com/) to conduct research in manufacturing of fibre-reinforced polymer composites using resin transfer moulding (RTM). The work will be closely aligned with the ESI Group's programme to develop a new paradigm for modelling of manufacturing processes under uncertainty by combining physics-based and data-driven models.

A student working on this project will develop and test novel Bayesian Inversion algorithms (BIA) which will estimate local material properties using in-process information. These estimations will be used for a novel non-destructive evaluation method. The student will also create a robust active control systems (ACS) for RTM processes using advanced BIAs. To implement the algorithms, the student will use state-of-the-art commercial software, PAM-COMPOSITES, developed by the industrial partner, ESI. For successful industrial exploitation of BIA and ACS, the use of Model Order Reduction (MOR) techniques is critical for speeding-up the complex calculations. Implementing MOR methods, such as Proper Generalized Decomposition and Machine Learning, will be key to the project.

The project will be also aligned with one of the EPSRC Future Composites Manufacturing Research Hub (https://cimcomp.ac.uk/) Core projects "Resin injection into reinforcement with uncertain heterogeneous properties" and include the opportunity to perform experimental validations of the developed modelling approaches and to work closely with the industrial and academic partners.

First-class or upper second-class Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, such as engineering, material science, applied mathematics (mathematics scholarships) (applied mathematics scholarships) or physics.

Experience in finite element modelling and/or composites manufacturing modelling (e.g. Ansys, Virtual Performance Solution (VPS), Ansys Fluent, CFX, OpenFOAM, PAM-COMPOSITES) would be advantageous

The successful candidate will join the University of Nottingham's Composites Research Group which leads the EPSRC Future Composites Manufacturing Research Hub, a 10.3m investment in fundamental research that aims to deliver a step change in the production of polymer matrix composites. More information on the Hub can be found at cimcomp.ac.uk.

Work directly with leading academics from Engineering and Applied Mathematics and industrial partners from the composites supply chain, including leading UK (UK scholarships) aerospace and automotive companies, offering excellent career opportunities following graduation. Have 3 months placement with the industrial partner (ESI Group).

Have access to industry-relevant taught modules delivered by the Industrial Doctorate Centre (IDC) in Composites Manufacture at the University of Bristol.

Successful applicants will receive a tax free scholarship at the RCUK rate (15,285 per annum for 2020/21) and tuition fees for four years, subject to satisfactory research progress. This funding is for UK and EU applicants only (see the eligibility rules at https://epsrc.ukri.org/skills/students/guidance-on-epsrc-studentships/eligibility/). Candidates should be available to start on 1st October or 1st December 2020.

To apply for a research studentship, please upload a CV and covering letter to https://cimcomp.ac.uk/submit-your-cv/ quoting the ENG reference number
