Wageningen University and Research International PhD Position

Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD position in bioinformatics in Netherlands. The funds for this fellowship are available for 18 months. Applications will be evaluated on a continuous basis.

Are you ready for a PhD position in Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, or molecular life sciences? Do you have a strong affinity with both wet lab and computational work? We offer you the chance to give your career a boost in Wageningen!

As a PhD candidate, you will combine state-of-the-art molecular tools available at the hosting lab to build strains, fermentation experiments in small scale (1.5L) bio-reactors, computational modelling of metabolism and analysis of omics and bioreactor data sets. Machine learning and data integration techniques will be used to iteratively refine the designs towards an optimal biocatalyst in our project.

The project is about metabolic modelling which provides a solid foundation both for increased understanding of cellular metabolism, and for tailoring of microbial chassis towards innovative biotechnological applications. In this project we will develop a solution to provide a sustainable replacement of palm-oil that will contribute to meeting the growing demand of oils and fatty acids.

We will use the well-known lipid producer yeasts Cutaneotrichosporon curvatus (formerly known as Cryptococcus curvatus) and Yarrowia lipolytica. Through a combination of model driven experimentation followed by experimental characterization we will develop strategies to control not only the amount but also the chain and or saturation level of the produced fatty acids.

In this project our laboratory will work closely together with the applied research groups of Wageningen Food & Biobased Research, where direct translation towards application will be pursued with several industrial partners.

We offer a full-time position (38 hours), initially for 18 months after which a go/no go decision will be taken on an extension for an additional 30 months.

Gross salary per month 2325,- in the first year rising to 2972,- per month in the fourth year, in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement Wageningen University (scale P).

The Laboratory of Systems & Synthetic Biology ( addresses in an integrated way critical issues and novel biotechnological applications in the areas of Health & Food, BioBased Products and Environment.

Our mission is to contribute to the elucidation [from a Systems Biology perspective] of the mechanisms underlying basic cellular processes, evolution and interactions among microbes and between microbes and their environment (including the human host), and to translate this knowledge [from a Synthetic Biology perspective] into applications of biotechnological, medical and environmental interest.
