The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a Research Assistant/Associate to conduct research at the forefront of Artificial Cell Engineering.

Dr Yuval Elani was awarded a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship and he is seeking to appoint a research associate for 24 months to work on this project.

What if we could create entirely artificial cells from scratch? And can we engineer artificial cells as micromachines which perform bespoke functions in industrial and clinical settings? Answering these questions will pave the way for disruptive applications and transform our understanding of biology.

In this project, the candidate will develop polymer-based synthetic cells that are engineered to possess behaviours that are the hallmarks of life: motility, energy generation, communication, replication, decision making, and self-repair.

The post is targeted at applicants with a physical-science/engineering background with experience in applying their skills to biological problems. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is desired: biophysics, chemical biology, soft matter, membrane biophysics, synthetic biology, biochemical systems and microfluidics.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range 35,477 - 38,566 per annum.

The post is available from 01 August 2020 for 24 months. The post is based in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London (Imperial College London scholarships) (South Kensington Campus and White City campus).
