Application are invited for a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher in Microfluidics (Research Associate). We are seeking to appoint a postdoctoral researcher to develop a Lab-on-Chip device for point-of-care diagnostics. Following the award of the BBSRC, The Centre for Bio-Inspired Technology (Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering) and the Department of Medicine are collaborating on the development of a novel diagnostic device to identify bacterial and viral pathogens on pig lungs, which is based on an electronic platform developed by our team. Particularly, the project consists in developing a microfluidic device which integrates a DNA sample preparation module in order to perform a completely automated bioassay able to detect biological target directly in a raw sample. The automation of the entire process reduces the risk of contamination and enhances the reliability and the high-throughput of the test. The microfluidic chip needs also to compartmentalise the sample fluid in multiple chambers to perform concurrently amplification reactions in parallel. Performing multiplex analysis is essential to provide healthcare of accurate diagnosis, by distinguishing different pathogens which cause infectious diseases that present similar symptoms in a host.

The postholder will undertake a cutting-edge microfluidic and Lab-on-Chip research employed in the development of point-of-care biomedical platform technologies addressed to infectious diseases diagnostics. The post-doctoral researcher will join the infection technology team at the Centre of Bio-inspired Technology, a cross-disciplinary team responsible for the development of high-quality research programme to deliver scientific excellence and social and economic impact in health research.

- PhD in one of the following areas: Biophysics, Biology, Bioengineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Computational Biology, or similar.

- 3 years or more Minimum Field of Expertise in developing Lab-on-chip devices. - Practical laboratory experience within a research environment and publication in relevant and refereed journals or conferences. - In-depth understanding of microfluidic principles, immunoassay development, device processing and technology integration, and be aware of the current state-of-the-art in rapid prototyping and experience with plastics fabrication, microscale fabrication, small instrument development. - Experience with fluidic modelling software such as COMSOL or MathLab and 3D/2D CAD Software (e.g. SolidWorks). - Highly skilled in manufacturing and prototyping techniques with the ability to impart knowledge to others. - Ability to learn and follow new protocols as they become relevant for different studies. - Good knowledge of Health and Safety regulations. - Ability to work effectively within a team, sharing peer learning and teaching. - To take direction and to work with limited supervision. Being able to prioritise work in response to deadlines. - Flexible approach to working hours according to the requirements of the technical procedures. - Good organisational and problem solving skills. - Good ability to communicate with staff and students at all levels. - Good IT Skills. Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range 35,477 – 38,566 per annum.
