PhD Scholarship Position in Information Fairness and Socially Beneficial Ai

Chalmers University of Technology is pleased to invite applicants to apply for a new opening PhD position in artificial intelligence. The initial contract for this position is five years. Applications are invited up to May 25, 2020.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a joint department at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, with activities on two campuses in the city of Gothenburg. The department has around 270 employees from over 30 countries. Our research has a wide span, from theoretical foundations to applied systems development. We provide high quality education at Bachelor’s, Master’s and graduate levels, offering over 120 courses each year. We also have extensive national and international collaborations with academia, industry and society.

Our aim is to actively increase our gender balance in both our department and division. We therefore strongly encourage female applicants for our positions. As an employee at Chalmers and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, you are given the opportunity to contribute to our active work within the field of equality and diversity. We are working broadly with equality projects, for example the GENIE Initiative on gender equality for excellence. For more information, visit the GENIE website.

Artificially intelligent (AI) systems are playing an ever increasing role in society. To ensure that they are beneficial, they must act not only according to the designer’s intentions, but also in a way that is fair to all individuals and groups affected by their decisions. This project will design algorithms that will guide AI systems to be socially beneficial. The greatest challenge is to develop theory and algorithms with formal guarantees under different definitions of fairness and privacy.

The division works in machine learning, artificial intelligence (artificial intelligence scholarships) theory and applications. The group that the PhD student will join focuses on reinforcement learning, privacy and fairness.

The student will mainly work on developing their own research, with the aid of the main supervisor (Christos Dimitrakakis) and the rest of the students and postdoctoral associates in the group. In addition, 20% of the student’s time will be devoted to teaching activities, including supervision of Master theses.

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master’s level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in computer science, mathematics, economics or a related discipline. The student must have solid mathematical knowledge in linear algebra, calculus, probability and statistics.

The application should be marked with Ref 20200207 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically and be attached as pdf-files, as below:
