PhD Scholarship in Biological Oceanography at Technical University of Denmark

A PhD Scholarship in biological oceanography (fully funded oceanography scholarships) is available at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) with starting date 1st October 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The project will be carried out in the Section for Oceans and Arctic in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark.

The scholarship is part of the HORIZON2020 project ECOTIP ('Arctic biodiversity (latest biodiversity scholarship positions) change and its consequences: Assessing, monitoring and predicting the effects of ecosystem tipping cascades on marine ecosystem services and dependent human systems'). Project focus ison the effects of multiple anthropogenic stressors (including climate change) on the Arctic biodiversity, and the potential consequences of the biodiversity change to the functioning of the marine ecosystem and the services that it provides. The reduction in the sea ice and melting of the Greenland Ice Cap are already changing the hydrography of Arctic and sub-Arctic seas, which is expected to affect the stratification and seasonal dynamics of the marine ecosystems, with cascading effects to pelagic and benthic food webs and biogeochemical cycles. The multiple other stressors such as pollution, exploitation of living resources and invasive species add to these unpredictable effects of the climate change. The contribution of this PhD project is to investigate the tolerances of native and invasive species to the multiple anthropogenic stressors and the consequences of resulting changes in zooplankton community composition to the food web efficiency and biological pump.

The overall aim of the PhD project is to determine whether selected non-indigenous zooplankton species in the Arctic seas are more tolerant to the multiple stressors than native species, and whether the differences in species tolerances can result to changes in the species composition, with associated changes to ecosystem functions. The research spectrum of the Section for Oceans and Arctic covers oceanography, population ecology, observation technology and the Arctic. The research into oceanography integrates biological, physical and chemical parameters' interactions in the ocean, ranging from individual plankton to regional seas. We focus on understanding the key processes that govern the structure and function of pelagic food webs, as well as climate and ecosystem interactions.

The purpose of DTU Aqua is to provide research, advice and education at the highest international level within the sustainable exploitation of living marine and freshwater resources, the biology of aquatic organisms and the dynamics of ecosystems as well as their integration in ecosystem-based management. DTU Aqua has 260 employees, of whom a third are scientific staff. The other employees are assistant biologists, laboratory technicians, IT employees, administrative staff, ship's crew, student assistants etc. The institute is organized into eight scientific sections that carry out the research, educational and advisory activities. In addition, the institute has a number of scientific and administrative support functions, including the research vessel DANA. DTU Aqua has employees in Kgs.
