A Postdoctoral Research Associate is sought in the School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) at the University of Michigan. The successful candidate will be located on the Ann Arbor campus and co-supervised by Drs. Neil Carter, Stella Cousins, and Paige Fischer. The candidate will play a vital role in investigating the integrative effects of changing climate-related stress and forest management patterns on forest structural diversity and wildlife habitats in the Northwoods region (Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin). The successful candidate will assist with 1) developing and implementing models that relate climate change, forest characteristics, and wildlife habitats; 2) analyzing and visualizing model outputs to share with decision makers; and 3) writing scientific, peer-reviewed publications.

Forests are integrated social-ecological systems under increasing stress due to changing temperature and precipitation regimes associated with global climate change. These stressors affect both the human and the biological elements in forest ecosystems, particularly where forests are managed for individual and societal use. In northern Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, or the Northwoods, where individuals and families own the majority of forestland, forests face spread of pests and pathogens, and increased frequency and severity of storms, droughts, and thaws. However, the cascading influence of interactions between human behavior and climate change on forest dynamics and wildlife habitats in the Northwoods remain unclear. The successful candidate will help develop realistic projections of future forest ecosystem services to inform land management strategies for various stakeholder groups. The candidate will work closely with various organizations such as state departments of resources (DNRs), cooperative extension, and the USDA Forest Service Northern Forests Climate Hub and Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIACS).

The position is for 18 months, with the possibility of extension based on performance, need and funding. The start date is October 1, 2020, negotiable within Fall 2020.

The salary for this position is $50,376.00/year.

PhD (by start time of position) in Conservation, Ecology, Geography, Natural Resources, Wildlife Sciences or related field, from an accredited university. Competitive applicants will have strong numerical and statistical modeling background and experience with computer programming and coding (e.g., R, Python), GIS and remote sensing (remote sensing scholarships) applications, analyzing large datasets, and working in collaborative teams. Strong written and verbal communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work both in a team environment and independently are required.

Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with development of wildlife habitat models, vegetation dynamics models, forecast models, integrated social-ecological systems models, and/or research integrated with practitioner and stakeholder groups. Preference will also be given to scholars with a proven publication record.
