Postdocs to Build A Quantum Computer in Mathematics at Chalmers University of Technology

Chalmers University of Technology has an opening PhD position in information science. The initial contract for this position is two years. This position is closed on April 26, 2020.

About us

Our ambitious goals at Chalmers are to build a quantum computer with 100 superconducting qubits, and to apply it to real computational problems that cannot be efficiently solved on a conventional computer. Such computationally hard problems are found, e.g., in optimization, machine learning, quantum chemistry, materials science, etc.

These efforts are supported by the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT) and the OpenSuperQ project of the EU Flagship on Quantum Technology. Several industrial companies interested in applications of quantum computing are members of WACQT and OpenSuperQ, and they are developing relevant use cases in collaboration with us.

Building a quantum computer requires a multi-disciplinary effort between experimental and theoretical physicists, electrical and microwave engineers, computer scientists, software engineers, and researchers within materials science and nanotechnology. We are developing the superconducting quantum devices and control circuits, firmware, and methods required to create prototype quantum computers. We work in close collaboration between the experimentalists in the Quantum Technology Laboratory (QTL) and the theorists at the Applied Quantum Physics Laboratory (AQPL). The theorists help model the hardware and develop application use cases for the quantum processor. Our team currently has about 50 members - faculty, permanent research staff, post-doctoral researchers, PhD students, and master's / undergraduate students (experiments, theory, software) - and is expanding.

Our department is host to the state-of-the-art MC2 Nanotechnology Laboratory cleanroom, and our measurement lab at QTL is well equipped with cryogenic and microwave electronic equipment. Our qubits are state of the art. We are in a position to build and operate a quantum processor!

We are now seeking to fill POSTDOCTORAL positions at the Quantum Technology Laboratory, with focus on,

Design, verification, validation, and characterization of superconducting quantum processors.

You will be part of a team with the mission to demonstrate NISQ algorithms on ever larger and more accurate quantum processors, in close collaboration with the use-case development and modeling work in our theory team and with the superconductor quantum technology and process development team. The work involves the design of quantum processors and has a focus on device verification and validation by experimental, numerical, and theoretical analysis methods.

The ideal candidate has expertise in experimental quantum computing, microwave quantum optics, or related fields of experimental physics, quantum optimal control and quantum information science, high-speed electronics, microwave electronics, and cryogenic techniques.

About You

You have a PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Nanotechnology, or equivalent

Your verbal and written communication skills in English are very good

You are motivated for a career in quantum technology, be it in academia or at an institute or company

You have a collaborative attitude and an interest in working both independently and collaboratively in a team environment, sharing best practices and assuming responsibility. You are self-motivated, pay attention to detail, and possess a problem-solving analytical ability. You are willing to help supervise PhD students

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to two years with a possibility of extension for a maximum of two years.
