PhD Studentship Aircraft Advanced Rear End and Empennage Optimisation Enhanced By Anti-ice Coatings and Devices

University of Southampton, UK is offering PhD position in applied mathematics. This position is available for 5 years. Applicants should apply before May 31, 2020.

This is a unique opportunity for an enthusiastic and self-driven student to join a vibrant team with a well-proved expertise in multi-disciplinary computational aero-sciences driven by the technologies needed for next-generation aerospace systems. Among other international acknowledgements, our research team was honoured to receive the 2018 Best Technical Paper Award from the AIAA Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Technical Committee.

The PhD position available is part of an international research effort and leverages on highly specialised expertise and world-class facilities from a number of research and industrial partners. The project as a whole will tackle some of the challenges related to the rear fuselage and empennage shape optimization including anti-icing technologies, a very first attempt to date in this direction.

1) unlocking the capability to perform fast and accurate 3D ice accretion simulation suitable for non-straight leading edge empennages, accounting for effects of passive anti-ice coatings and devices like leading-edge undulations;

2) characterising, integrating, and exploiting the passive anti-ice coatings and devices for non-straight leading-edge empennage configurations, reaching TRL 5 at the end of the project;

3) developing and applying innovative aero-structural optimisation methods for advanced rear ends (ARE), including the effects of the passive anti-ice coatings and devices, to minimise drag and include structural and aeroelastic constraints;

4) validate the accuracy of the 3D icing accretion simulations and the performance of passive anti-ice coating and devices by means of large scale icing wind tunnel (IWT) experimental tests.

The PhD project will address mainly Point 3 and partly Point 2 from the above list of tasks.

The successful applicant will be encouraged to further develop analytical and computational skills, work closely with team members, and submit the research results to high-quality journals. The applicant is also expected to visit one or more overseas institutions throughout the duration of the PhD programme. After three years of study, the successful applicant will be well-prepared for a rewarding industrial or academic career, leveraging on the network of contacts created as part of the research project.

The successful applicant will have an excellent background in physics, engineering or applied mathematics, and programming experience. It is desirable to have familiarity with a computational fluid dynamics and/or structural software. The three-year studentship is available to UK/EU students only. Applications are welcome from outstanding overseas applicants. However, the applicants must make appropriate arrangements to cover the difference between the overseas and UK tuition fees.

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Funding: full tuition fees for EU/UK students plus for UK students, an enhanced stipend of 15,285 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years.
