PhD Scholarship in Molecular Microbiology in Genomics at University of Gothenburg

Outstanding international students are invited to apply for a PhD scholarship in analytical chemistry at University of Gothenburg. The funds for this fellowship are available for four years. This position is closed on May 11, 2020.

Research and graduate education at the department of chemistry and molecular biology comprises a wide scientific field from the atomic and molecular levels all the way through cells to intact organisms. Much of the phenomena studied here impact on our natural environment and living systems. We participate in undergraduate programs in chemistry, molecular biology, medicinal chemistry, biology, marine sciences, and pharmacy.

Many of the members of CMB are also part of the Centre for Antibiotic Resistance Research (CARe) which is a network of researchers addressing this global crisis.

Anne Farewell's group uses molecular genetics to study how bacterial cells respond to stress and more recently has focused on the mechanisms of the spread of antibiotic resistance between bacteria.

John Fletcher's group research is focused on the development and application of imaging mass spectrometry for biological analysis.

Our research groups collaborate to use cutting edge mass spectrometry methods to analyze bacterial strains. In this project we want to examine strains which show a decreased ability to transfer antibiotic resistance genes via conjugation. The long term aim of this work is to identify molecules which could be targets for anti-conjugation drug development as well as to understand the mechanism of this important process. Anne Farewell's group identifies these potential targets which are then analyzed further by John Fletcher's group. This information then leads to more collaborative studies on the function of these targets.

This work thus is truly multi-disciplinary and the project will involve work in several different areas of expertise. Because no potential applicant will likely have experience with all aspects and techniques associated with the project, experience in one area and an interest and willingness to learn other aspects is essential.

The assignments of the student will include: strain construction of E. coli mutants for further analysis, analysis of conjugation efficiency both manually and using a high-throughput robotic screening method, ToF-SIMS of selected strains and associated analysis of results, optimizing sample preparation for ToF-SIMS and testing the ability of ToF-SIMS to give not only abundance information but also information on sub-cellular localization. Each of at least four potential candidate proteins will be analyzed in more detail using a variety of methods to identify their mechanism of action in the conjugative process.

The recruited PhD student will participate in seminars and internal group meetings, and in addition interact with other research groups in the department, CARe or abroad.

As this is an interdisciplinary project where we will consider applicants with different educational backgrounds, the precise project of the selected PhD candidate in this research program will be modified according to his/her scientific background and interest.

Additionally, the student is expected to acquire 60 hp through PhD level courses, some of which are mandatory, and to help with the teaching of laboratory exercises that are part of undergraduate courses. Most work-related activities will be carried out in English.

To meet the specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies, applicants must: (i) have a second-cycle (advanced-level) degree in a relevant* subject area in the natural sciences, or (ii) have completed studies for at least 60 higher education credits at a second-cycle level in relevant subject areas in the natural sciences, or (iii) have completed a corresponding program of relevance to the planned third-cycle program, in Sweden or in another country, or have equivalent qualifications.

The specific entry requirements also include an acceptable command of spoken and written English. Guidelines for assessing English proficiency may include a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL test (or 213 on the TOEFL-CBT, or 79 on the TOEFL-iBT).

In selecting between applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements, their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies shall be taken into account.

A suitable educational background which should comprise one or more of the following areas: molecular biology, microbiology, synthetic biology, genomics, bioinformatics, high throughput molecular techniques including robotics, mass-spectrometry, or analytical chemistry.

Prior experience from experimental and in silico work in any of the above areas is advantageous. Experience with large data sets or statistical programming languages (e.g., R or SPSS) is an advantage.

High motivation to pursue doctoral studies and ability to independently plan and organize own experiments.

Good ability to analyse and communicate scientific results, and to present both in oral and written form.

Interest in a cross-disciplinary project is essential as well as a willingness to work with collaborating research groups.

Applications will be evaluated by the main supervisor and co-supervisor, to select a top group of candidates. These will be interviewed, if required over Internet or phone.

First day of employment: As soon as possible based on agreement

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for education on a doctoral level are given in SFS 1993:100. A new employment as a PhD student applies for a maximum of one year. The Appointment may be prolonged for up to two years at a time. The total employment period may not be longer than the equivalent of four years of full time doctoral studies.
