Specialist Nanofabrication for Biological Applications

Information about the research

The Westerlund group works on using nanofabrication for analysis of biomacromolcules, with main focus on DNA. The applications range from fundamental understanding of DNA-protein interactions to clinical applications in antibiotic resistance and cancer. The specialist will be involved in the research in several different projects by both producing standard nanofluidic devices, design and fabricate novel devices and do experiments in the microscopy lab using these devices. The position is hosted at the Chemical Biology division at the Biology and Biological Engineering department. The division is the home of six independent research groups working on topics related to Chemical Biology.

Job description

The Specialist will work with nanofabrication for biological applications in the Westerlund group. This includes providing the group with standard nanofluidic devices used in all ongoing projects. In addition, the person should be capable of bringing up new design ideas for ongoing or new projects.

The person is also expected to work on using the nanofluidic devices. This includes optical DNA mapping, where individual DNA molecules are stretched in nanofluidic channels and visualized via fluorescence microscopy. This methodology has applications in diagnosing infections, antibiotic resistance, cancer and more. This also includes biophysical analysis of DNA-protein interactions involved in DNA-repair.

The position is a full-time andpermanent position with individual salary.


To qualify as a Specialist, you must have a PhD degree in Nanoscience, Biotechnology, Biophysics or similar, along with several years of post doctoral experience. Experience in nanofabrication, especially using e-beam lithography is mandatory. Hands on experience with fluorescence microscopy and DNA analysis is mandatory. Knowledge of/experience with image analysis in Matlab would be beneficial but not mandatory.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the work, the candidate is expected to have good collaboration skills and be able to communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
