Postdoctoral Position in Galaxy Formation and Evolution

Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD position in nanotechnology at Chalmers University of Technology. The initial contract for this position is two years. This position is closed on January 31, 2020.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the topic of galaxy formation and evolution at the Department of Space, Earth and Environmental(SEE), Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. The starting date is flexible, though preferably second half of 2020.

Information about the research

You will join the research group of Dr. Kirsten K. Knudsen. The research is on high-redshift starburst/AGN and galaxy formation and evolution with focus on modelling the results obtained from observational studies with mm-wave/radio instruments such as ALMA, JVLA, and APEX. The goal is to further develop our understanding of what can be learned about the gas dynamics and gas excitation in high-z star-forming galaxies and AGN host galaxies. Depending on qualifications, you can also be involved in the observational aspects.

Major responsibilities

Your major responsibility as a postdoc is to perform your research in the research team of Kirsten K. Knudsen. The postdoc position will focus on modelling of observational results and on modelling that can be used for development of future observational projects. The position also includes some possibility for involvement in supervising master’s and/or PhD students. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

You should have a PhD, preferably in astronomy, by the start of the appointment. To be asuccessful candidate you should demonstrate potential for research in extragalactic astronomy and the topic of galaxy formation and evolution. Experience or expertise in modelling of gas dynamics and/or gas excitation properties of galaxies is an asset. Experience or interest in mm/submm/radio interferometry would also be an asset. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If you do not speak Swedish, we strongly encourage you to learn and Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
