Postdoc Position at University of Cambridge

University of Cambridge is pleased to invite applicants to apply for a postdoctoral researcher position in public health. The initial contract for this position is 36 months. Applications are welcome before February 02, 2020.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 36 months in the first instance.

Applications are invited for one Research Associate position on the project “Suburbanisation, Gender, and Health in the Global South”. Much scholarly and policy work focusses on urbanisation in the Global South. And yet the pattern of growth of most major Southern cities tends to be more suburban and informal than urban. Around provisioned central business, political and religious communities, populations settle via self-built housing, regularly in the absence of centralised services and infrastructure. These suburbs, which often constitute the majority of a city population, rest at crucial frontiers of the global economy, at the margins of public health systems, and on the edges of political citizenship. This research asks how an attention to the lived and gendered experience of Southern suburbs matters under these conditions, with a specific ethnographic focus on health politics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Kampala, Uganda.

Applicants must be fluent in the necessary languages, have research experience in regions of Africa, and hold a PhD in Medical Anthropology. In addition, they should be conversant in anthropological, gender and urban theory and have published in a top anthropology journal, with indication of book manuscript well in progress with a university press.

Candidates should normally have a PhD (submitted or nearly submitted at the time of application) in a relevant field and with experience of the methods required for this project. They should provide evidence of potential for research and publication at the highest level.

All applications will be considered by all relevant members of the department.
