PhD Scholarship in Natural Sciences with Specialising in Geography

The Department of Earth Sciences has around 70 employees. We have bachelor’s and master’s programs in geosciences and geography as well as postgraduate education with several geoscientific fields. Our strong research areas are climatology, biogeochemistry, petrology / geochemistry and applied geoscience.

Blue-green infrastructure, such as rainbeds, stormwater ponds, parks, street trees, green roofs and facades, is considered by many as a good solution for dealing with the effects of a changing climate such as increased rainfall and increased temperature. Integration of blue-green infrastructure has therefore become an important issue in the physical planning to create robust climate-adapted cities. The benefits of blue-green solutions are many. In addition to managing water and lowering the temperature, blue-green infrastructure provides other important functions and services to society, such as biodiversity, air and water purification, soil stabilization, noise reduction, recreation and well-being. However, there are major challenges with blue-green infrastructure. For example, blue-green solutions are often space-consuming, expensive to install, maintenance-intensive and many times it is difficult to find solutions that are attractive to city residents.

In January 2020, a four-year research project will begin with the overall aim of developing knowledge and methods that enable a comprehensive assessment of different types of blue-green infrastructure. Different types of blue-green infrastructure will be evaluated in terms of stormwater management, water quality, outdoor climate, indoor climate, energy use, recreation and social inclusion in different urban environments (inner city, middle city and outer city), in the short and long term (current and future climate) and from a life-cycle and socio-economic perspective with the help of multi-criteria analysis. Multi-criteria analysis supported by a user perspective (interviews and workshops with local actors and planners) will form the basis for the development of recommendations for socio-cultural and environmentally sustainable blue-green solutions in urban physical planning.

The doctoral student will be included as part of the newly started research project, where the main tasks will include research in outdoor climate, recreation and social inclusion related to blue-green infrastructure. Much of the work will also include work in multi-criteria analysis and the development of recommendations for planners, managers, politicians and other types of urban development practitioners.

- To investigate how different blue-green solutions affect the outdoor climate in the city.

- To investigate how different blue-green solutions can contribute to increased recreation and social inclusion.

- Communication with practitioners in municipal and regional planning as well as residents, the general public, property owners and other relevant stakeholders for the development of an integrated assessment of urban blue-green infrastructure (communication in Swedish).

Methodological working methods included are, for example, geographical information systems, questionnaires, interviews, physical modeling and basic computer programming.

Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their studies. They may, however, work to a limited extent with educational tasks, research and administration according to the regulations.

To be admitted to doctoral studies you must have been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or have acquired substantial equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Those who have completed a degree at an advanced level in a relevant natural science subject such as, for example, have special qualifications. geography, or completed course requirements of at least 60 higher education credits in relevant subjects such as urban planning, environmental science, or in any other way, within or outside the country, acquired essentially equivalent knowledge relevant to the planned education. Merit is to have completed university courses in urban climatology, geographical information systems, spatial planning, impact assessments (MKA / SKA), quantitative and qualitative method courses. Good knowledge of English and Swedish is also a merit.

Extent: 100 % Location: Department of Earth Sciences, Gothenburg First day of employment: As agreed, as soon as possible. A third cycle education at our department will lead to the degree of doctor of philosophy in Natural sciences with specialising in geography. This Doctoral Student is funded by external funds and by the department.

Regulations for employment of doctoral students are given in SFS 1998:80. Only those who are admitted to third-cycle studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships.

The initial appointment may apply for no longer than one year. An appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. The total employment period may not exceed the time corresponding to full-time third-cycle studies for four years.

Salaries for doctoral students are regulated in a local agreement at the University.
