PhD Scholarship in Criminology at Stockholm University

Stockholm University, Sweden is offering PhD position in social sciences. The funding allows successful candidate to work for four years. The deadline for applying is January 31, 2020.

The Department of Criminology at Stockholm University announces 1-2 doctoral studentships in Criminology. We provide all our doctoral students with a workplace at the department and expect them to be present at the department and actively contribute to the department’s research environment.

Qualification requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements,for doctoral studies in Criminology you need a Bachelors degree (preferably in Criminology or other social sciences) and at least 60 ECTS credits at advanced level (a part of those should include a thesis). The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.


The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the PhD training. Special attention is devoted to the degree of independence in analysis and design exhibited by applicants in their earlier work, their methodological and scientific maturity, and the capacity for problem formulation and stringency exhibited in the applicants' earlier work and in their doctoral research proposal. Decisions on admissions are taken by the Department Board on 28 May, 2020 and the applicants are notified by e-mail some day afterwards.

The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
