PhD Scholarship at University of Ghent

Applications are invited for a PhD position in astrophysics to join University of Ghent, Belgium. The funds for this fellowship are available for four years. Applications should be sent before February 29, 2020.

Applications are invited for a PhD position in the field of astrochemistry at the Department of Physics and Astronomy ofGhent University (Belgium) and at the Laboratoire d’Etudes du Rayonnement et de la Matire (LERMA) ofCY Cergy ParisUniversity (France).

Ghent is located in the Flemish speaking part of Belgium, some 50 km north of Brussels. Ghent is renowned for its beautiful medieval town centre, its lively cultural and music scene, and its vibrant student life. Ghent University is an international, highly rated university with more than 40,000 students. The astronomy group’s expanding research interests include supernovae, nearby galaxies, infrared astronomy, hydrodynamical simulations/radiative transfer, galaxy formation and evolution, high-redshift observations and observational cosmology.

Neuville sur Oise, where the laboratory is located, is in the Paris region. It is at 40 minutes from Paris Chatelet by RER A. CY Cergy Paris University has about 20,000 students and is member of the EUTOPIA (https://eutopia-university.eu/) European University. The successful applicant will conduct laboratory experiments at LERMA (https://lerma.obspm.fr/spip.php?article48) to measure the diffusion and desorption energies for a range of elements and interstellar dust proxies. The results of these laboratory experiments will be used by the successful candidate to infer whether a viable chemical formation route to grow grains in the interstellar medium exists. The successful candidate will need to take part in the laboratory experiments during a few months each year, but the residence location (Ghent or Cergy-Paris) for the remaining research time will be negotiable. The position is fully funded for four years, withsufficient funding for short and long-term visits to the partner institutes. On the project start date the Candidates must possess a Master degreein Physics, Astrophysics, or a similar field. Prior experience with laboratory experiments and/or astrochemical modelling would be an asset, but is not required.

Informal inquires are welcome (ilse.delooze@ugent.be, francois.dulieu@u-cergy.fr) and applications sent by February 28, 2020 will be fully considered. Applicants should submit their CV and arrange for two reference letters to be sent by February 28, 2020 to ilse.delooze@ugent.be.The starting date can be as early as September 1st 2020 and should be no later than January 1st 2021.
