PhD Project in Algorithms for Adaptive Compressed Computation

DTU Compute's Sections for Algorithms, Logic and Graphs, would like to invite applications for a 3-year PhD position starting 1 February 2020. The project is financed by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and DTU Compute.

The research of the Algorithms, Logic, and Graphs section coversAlgorithmics, Computational Logic, and Graph Theory,and is the scientific foundation for constructing robust, efficient, and intelligent software applications based on mathematically sound solutions. Project Description The PhD project is in theoretical algorithms and focuses on techniques to perform computation directly on compressed highly-repetitive data without decompressing it first. The goal the project is to develop new algorithmic techniques for compressed computation by pursuing new methods that can adapt to the difficulty of the input instance by taking advantage of other parameters of data or patterns in the distribution of queries. Responsibilities and tasks You will contribute to all parts of the funded research project. The main task in the project is designing new algorithmic techniques for access and queries based on structural properties of the compressed data. Your research can include both theoretical work and implementations of the developed algorithms. You are expected to be able to work on algorithmic research both independently and in collaboration with the rest of the project group. You will be part of the team of researchers and external partners within the project. You will be an important part of the international collaboration with several visits to the other institutions in the project (Haifa University, Israel, and Wrocaw University, Poland). Qualifications You should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree. The master degree should be in computational science and engineering (CSE), applied mathematics, or engineering, or equivalent academic qualifications. Preference will be given to candidates who can document research in the area, strong potential for research in the area, or other relevant experience in the area. Approval and Enrolment The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in the DTU Compute PhD School Programme. Assessment The assessment of the applicants will be made by Associate Professors, Inge Li Grtz and Philip Bille. Salary and appointment terms The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
