PhD Position High-speed Directly Modulated Micro-lasers

Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) has the following PhD student vacancy for research on high-speed directly modulated micro-lasers, in the research group Photonic Integration (PhI) of the department of Electrical Engineering.

Job description

The photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are more and more important for datacenter applications, for their speed, scalability and producibility. The ever-increasing data capacity has pushed the development of multiplexing technologies with parallelized channels in a single chip to achieve >100G bit rate. However to meet future terabit rate, parallelization alone cannot keep up with the growth. The performance of the individual transmitter (most commonly the direct modulated lasers) needs to be enhanced significantly. VCSELs and DFB lasers have been typically used in direct modulation. But their 3dB modulation bandwidths are limited typically at about 25 GHz level. To break the bottleneck, we need a fresh look at the semiconductor laser design. A photonic integration platform that combines wafer-scale indium phosphide with wafer scale silicon enables the creation of high-confinement photonic devices. This has been created as the result of several previous research projects, and continues to provide a platform for a number of new research lines. In this research project, the platform will be used to explore new device designs and realisations for directly modulated lasers.

This position will study the key technologies to enable micro-lasers on an InP membrane for high-speed direct modulation. The project will include device-level simulations (optical, electrical, thermal), device and circuit layout, process flow design, and device fabrication in the Nanolab@TUe cleanroom. Characterization of devices fabricated and analysis of results will also be undertaken. This project is in collaboration with Huawei Ipswich Research Center in UK. During the work, regular communications, technical discussions and advice from Huawei Ipswich Research Center are expected.

The team

The Institute for Photonic Integration (IPI) has five dynamic and ambitious research groups, which are closely cooperating: a systems group, a photonic integration technology group and three materials research groups. You will work in the Photonic Integration group (PhI) which has about 35 members, 20 of which are PhD students. The IPI (previously COBRA) is internationally leading on advanced InP-based Photonic Integrated Circuits technology. See .
