Research Fellow in The Electronic Properties of Twisted 2D Semiconductors

Applicants are invited to apply for a postdoctoral associate position in condensed matter physics at Monash University, Australia. This position is closed on February 02, 2020.

Everyone needs a platform to launch a satisfying career. At Monash, we give you the space and support to take your career in all kinds of exciting new directions. You'll have access to quality research, infrastructure and learning facilities, opportunities to collaborate internationally, as well as the grants you'll need to publish your work. We're a university full of energetic and enthusiastic minds, driven to challenge what's expected, expand what we know, and learn from other inspiring, empowering thinkers.

The School of Physics and Astronomy at Monash University is a top-ranked research school with a large and vibrant program in experimental and theoretical condensed matter physics and quantum gases. The School benefits from strong interactions with the Monash Centre for Atomically Thin Materials and the ARC Centre of Excellence in Future Low-Energy Electronics Technologies, led by ARC Laureate Professor Michael Fuhrer, the main supervisor for this position. The School's state-of-the-art experimental laboratories are set within the $175M New Horizons Centre, and the School works closely with other major experimental platforms in the Monash precinct including the Monash Centre for Electron Microscopy, the Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication, and the Australian Synchrotron.

There currently exists a remarkable opportunity for a passionate Research Fellow to conduct research in experimental condensed matter physics and surface science, by examining the electronic properties of twisted 2D semiconductors. These atomically-thin semiconductor layers stacked with a twist allow for new degrees of control over the electronic properties of the resulting materials, with interesting implications for the fundamental physics of interacting electrons in nanostructures, as well as potential for groundbreaking applications.

The Research Fellow will fabricate van der Waals heterostructures of 2D semiconductors with controlled twist angle, and study their electronic properties using low-temperature magnetotransport, and will also work closely with the team (Prof. Fuhrer, Dr. Mark Edmonds, overseas theory and experiment collaborators, and an additional postdoctoral fellow to be appointed) to study the electronic structure of twisted 2D semiconductor heterostructures using scanning tunnelling microscopy and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The Research Fellow is expected to publish papers in high-impact journals, present results at major conferences and workshops, and to assist in the supervision of PhD and honours students.

For six consecutive years, Melbourne has been rated the #1 city worldwide for the quality of life (seeEconomist&Guardian), with excellent education, healthcare, infrastructure, low crime, and exceptional cuisine, cultural activities, and creative design. The regional area is renowned for its dramatic coastline, extensive parks, exotic wildlife, and the Yarra Valley wine region.

With a supportive working environment, Monash offers attractive Salary Packaging options. On-site facilities such as childcare and Monash Sports are offered to employees and students.

This is a unique opportunity to join a leading "Group of 8" University with top-rankings and like-minded, passionate academics. If you feel you have the drive and expertise to contribute to this cutting-edge group, then we encourage you to apply!

At Monash University, we are committed to being a Child Safe organisation. This position at the University may require the incumbent to hold a valid Working with Children Check.

This role is a full-time position; hower, flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.

Your application must address the selection criteria. Please refer to “How to apply for Monash Jobs”.

Please note: Monash University will be closed from 21 December 2019 until 1 January 2020 inclusive.
