Research Assistant at University of Cambridge

University of Cambridge, UK is inviting applicants to apply for a postdoc position in biotechnology. Applications should be sent before January 17, 2020.

A position is available in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology for a highly motivated Research Assistant/Research Associate working on the Global Challenge Research Fund supported project: “Local production of a Cas12-based typhoid diagnostic in Cameroon through a novel academic-community partnership”.

The successful applicant will join Dr Jenny Molloy’s laboratory in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Cambridge. The project will focus on developing a proof-of-principle DNA-based typhoid diagnostic using Cas12 in collaboration with colleagues in Buea University and MboaLab Biotech in Cameroon. The diagnostic tool will distinguish typhoid from paratyphoid and will be low-cost and locally manufacturable. The role-holder will be responsible for developing isothermal amplification strategies alongside low-cost expression and purification strategies for the enzymes used in the assay.

The position is available for five months with the latest start date being 1 March 2020. The successful candidate will have a strong background in molecular or synthetic biology including a PhD in a relevant area (or have submitted a PhD by the time of appointment). Experience in molecular cloning, protein expression and purification is essential. Experience in molecular diagnositcs and particularly use of Cas12 or Cas13-based systems is desirable.
