Postdoctoral Postdoc Position Inter-group Conflict

Applicants are invited to apply for a postdoctoral researcher position in mathematics at University of Cambridge. The funds for this position are available for 18 months. Potential candidates should apply before January 15, 2020.

A post-doctoral research associate position in the Department of Zoology, located in Central Cambridge on Downing Street, is available from 1 February 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter for up to eighteen months, to work with Professor Rufus Johnstone on mathematical and computational modelling of intergroup conflict in banded mongooses.

The PDRA will work on the development of models that explore the causes and consequences of intergroup conflict among heterogeneous groups. We are interested in i) the impact of key features of animal societies such as group size, resource wealth and mean genetic relatedness on responses to changing resource availability and intruder pressure; ii) the effects of within-group heterogeneity on outgroup conflict effort and ingroup cooperation, and iii) the interaction between inter-group conflict and within-group dominance structure. There is, however, scope for the focus of the modelling to reflect the interests of the candidate.

This work will be carried out as part of a NERC-funded project, in collaboration with Prof Michael Cant, Prof Darren Croft and Dr Faye Thompson at the University of Exeter, who will be collecting data on inter-group conflict in wild banded mongooses, which will be used to inform development of the models and to test their predictions.

Duties will include developing models of inter-group conflict, using a combination of game theoretical and adaptive dynamic techniques, possibly supplemented by individual-based simulations, and analysing and writing up the results.

Informal enquiries can be directed to Prof Johnstone,

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for up to 18 months.
