Postdoctoral Postdoc Position at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill

University of North Carolina Chapel Hill is offering postdoctoral associate position. Applications will be evaluated immediately.

Post-doctoral fellowship available:

The aerodynamic and metabolic costs and benefits of flow interactions in bird flight The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a Post-doctoral position beginning spring 2020. This position is supported by a National Science Foundation grant funding a wind-tunnel study of the energetics, biomechanics and aerodynamics of bird flight in unsteady flows. This is a full-time position with benefits and an up to 33-month duration. Conference and research travel support will be provided. The project is a collaboration between Dr. Tyson Hedrick (UNC Chapel Hill, Dept. of Biology), Dr. Kenny Breuer (Brown University, School of Engineering) and Dr. Alex Gerson (UMass Amherst, Dept. of Biology). It will use flow visualization, respirometry, high-speed videography and accelerometry to quantify how birds interact with organized but unsteady flows such as those produced by airfoils or flapping wings. Of particular interest is whether (or not), how, and to what extent birds take advantage of beneficial flows that might subsidize the cost of flapping flight. Primary job duties: - Oversee day to day experiments and data collection during the summer data collection season at Brown University - Data analysis and manuscript preparation - Assist PIs in mentoring project PhD and undergraduate students - Project planning and development of experimental apparatus
