Postdoc in Ultrafast Plasmonic Hydrogen Sensors at Chalmers University of Technology

Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden is inviting applicants to apply for a PhD position in sustainable energy. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for two years in Sweden. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before January 20, 2020.

Information about the Research Project

Hydrogen sensors play a key role in a fossil-fuel-free hydrogen economy due to the high flammability of hydrogen-air mixtures. To this end, plasmonic hydrogen sensors are very promising due to their combination of high selectivity and sensitivity, and we have recently achieved a breakthrough in terms of response time (Nature Materials 2019, 18 (5), 489-495). Now we are taking the next step towards market introduction of plasmonic hydrogen sensors in this project, which is a collaboration between Insplorion AB (www.Insplorion.com), a Swedish sensor company, Powercell AB ( www.powercell.com), a Swedish fuel cell manufacturer, and my research group at Chalmers. The main focus of this project funded by the Swedish Energy Agency is on further improving the compatibility of our hydrogen sensor chips with humid environments and with a wide temperature range, as well as to integrated them with Insplorion AB’s commercial sensor platform and testing them in Powercell’s fuel cell solutions. The Langhammer group at the Chemical Physics Divison at the Department of Physics operates at the interface between materials science, nanoscience, catalysis, nanoplasmonics and in situ spectroscopy, with a particular focus on sustainable energy-related materials, nanosensors, nanoparticles and catalysis. For that purpose, we continuously develop and evolve our own methodologies for state-of-the-art nanofabrication, as well as build our own customized research instrumentation and explore commercialization directions. Now we intensify our efforts towards taking our hydrogen sensors to an industrial setting in collaboration with partners Insplorion AB and Powercell AB. - characterize the nanofabricated sensor chips.

- implement the Chalmers sensor chips in Insplorion AB’s sensor device.

- coordinate the interaction between the three partners of this project, Insplorion AB, Powercell AB and the research group at Chalmers.

- evaluate and summarize your data and share them with the project team on a regular basis.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1). Qualifications A PhD in either Physics, Applied Physics, Materials Science, Nanotechnology or Chemistry is mandatory. You must have hands-on experience with experimental work in the area of sensors in at least one of the following contexts: (i) sensors based on nanotechnology/nanomaterials; (ii) nanoplasmonic optical sensors.

You must have excellent collaboration skills.

- experience with hydrogen sensors is considered a merit.

- experience with nanofabrication in cleanroom environment is considered a merit.

- experience with thin polymer films is considered a merit.

- experience with analysis of complex scientific data is considered a merit.

- experience with computer programming using Python or MATLAB is considered a merit.

- experience with working in a cross-disciplinary project at the interface between academia and industry is considered a merit.

The position also requires excellent communication skills in written and spoken English. Applicants who do not have English or a Scandinavian language as their mother tongue need to provide documentation of good communication skills in English, typically evidenced by an English language test, for example TOEFL 550 (paper-based)/TOEFL 213 (computer-based), and exemplified during the interview process prior to admission.
