Postdoc in Human Rights in East and South-east Asia

Lund University, Sweden has an opening postdoctoral researcher position in sustainable development. The funding allows successful candidate to work for three years. The deadline for applying is February 12, 2020.

The Joint Faculties of the Humanities and Theology have eight departments and carries out large and varied work within research and education with the purpose to understand people as cultural and social beings. The faculties have some 700 employees and around 4000 students.

The Department of History consists of the Division of Human Rights Studies (HRS), the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies (ACE) and the Division of History. HRS conducts education in the form of a B.A. programme, an international master's programme, and a Ph.D. programme. ACE conducts an international master's programme and individual courses at the B.A. level. ACE is starting its Ph.D programme in 2020. At the department there is also a national research school in history. At HRS, research addresses historical, political, and philosophical perspectives with a focus on socio-economic rights, the role of civil society, children's and youth's rights, and the history of human rights. At ACE research on human rights focuses on civil society, the impact of digital technologies on human rights and on the struggle for human rights, migrants' and workers' rights, as well as issues related to freedom of speech and academic freedom.

The placement of the position is to be divided between the Division of Human Rights and the Centre for East and South-East Asia.

The person employed is expected to work independently but should also cooperate with other researchers within the fields of Human Rights Studies and East and South-East Asian studies. The postdoctoral fellow should participate in, and contribute to, the research environment through active participation in research seminars and other research-related activities within these fields, contribute with their own research within these fields, as well as contribute to the development of the specific research environment focusing on Human Rights in East and South-East Asia. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to take part in organising workshops, be in charge of seminars, and contribute to the development of research applications. The postdoctoral fellow is also expected to take part in teaching at the B.A. and master's levels. These tasks require the postdoctoral fellow to have a high level of presence at the workplace. Teaching, supervision, and other administrative tasks comprise a maximum of 20% of the position.

The candidate must have been awarded a Ph.D. or an international degree deemed equivalent not more than three years before the application deadline. Candidates who completed a Ph.D. over three years ago must provide certificates of parental leave, illness, or similar reasons for leave in the application.The candidate needs to have written a Ph.D. thesis with a focus on some aspect of Human Rights in East and South-East Asia. Very good and documented knowledge of English is required as well as relevant knowledge in an Asian language, depending on the research project.

The grounds for assessment are a good ability to develop and conduct high-quality research, and teaching skills. The main criterion for assessment for a postdoctoral fellowship is research expertise. As documentation for the assessment of qualifications, applicants are to submit a project plan for the research they intend to carry out during their appointment. Only applicants whose project plan and earlier works can strengthen the research environment will be considered for the employment as postdoctoral fellow.

Special qualifications are previous research and/or a project plan related to the research areas at the Division of Human Rights and the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies, in particular the role of civil society in authoritarian contexts, minority rights, economic and social rights, sustainable development and human rights, digital developments and human rights, freedom of speech, and academic freedom. Experience of arranging seminars and different public events is also valued.

The appointment is a fixed-term position for a maximum of two years and is full time in accordance with "Agreement on fixed-term employment as a postdoc" between labour market parties dated 4 September 2008 (Swedish Agency for Government Employers, OFRs, SACO-S and SEKO).
