Postdoc in Computational Metabolomics at Chalmers University of Technology

Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden is inviting applicants to apply for a PhD position in communicable diseases. The funding allows successful candidate to work for three years. The deadline to apply is February 02, 2020.

Information about the research

Studies of the molecular mechanisms underlying interactions between lifetime exposures (e.g. from foods and gut microbiota) and the host are urgently needed for improved understanding of their role in the development and prevention of non-communicable diseases. Metabolomics is a fundamental tool in this research and gives a snapshot of the molecular phenotype. Large amounts of data are being generated and there is great need to develop and apply high-throughput analysis pipelines and novel bioinformatic tools to analyze and integrate metabolomics data with other data domains, such as other Omics. We are now looking for a PostDoc in Computational Metabolomics to identify metabolomic profiles associated with exposures to environmental exposures (food, lifestyle, air, noise, etc) in large untargeted LC-MS-based metabolomics data sets. These data will contain several thousand samples with repeated measures at multiple timepoints. The PostDoc will also be responsible for integration of metabolomics with other Omics data using novel tools for data integration.

About the division

The division of Food and Nutrition Science is one of four research divisions at the Department of Biology and Biological Engineering. Food and Nutrition Science is one of the leading units in the area in Sweden with particular strengths in nutritional and computational metabolomics, dietary biomarkers, micronutrient metal nutrition, nutritional immunology as well as marine food science and nutrition. The division has a wide range of modern analytical equipment for chromatography coupled with mass spectrometery, an in vitro human cell laboratory, and a microbiology laboratory. The division has also extensive collaborations with Chalmers Mass Spectrometry Infrastructure and The Swedish NMR center (University of Gothenburg) which are infrastructure facilities with top modern equipment for metabolomics experiments. The division focuses on nutritional solutions for health and disease prevention by studies on the molecular, cellular, and whole-body level. It also has a strong focus on sustainable use of food raw materials and on many different quality aspects of food.

Major responsibilities

This PostDoc position will require a high degree of data analytical competence, including LC-MS data preprocessing, multivariate analysis and multiOmics data integration. The applicant is further expected to contribute to the active software development in the research environment and to apply and develop cutting edge tools for multivariate analysis of repeated measures as well as data integration. There will also be opportunities to contribute to development of AI / machine leaning for metabolomics analysis with the aim to put Chalmers at the forefront in health engineering and precision nutrition.

A successful candidate must demonstrate excellent understanding of the field of computational metabolomics, and will require the ability to execute high quality research efforts with a high degree of independence. The candidate is expected to supervise students, as well as to contribute to the development of the field of computational metabolomics at the intersection between lifetime exposures, including diet, systems biology, bioanalytical chemsitry and software/algorithm development.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).


To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field; bioinformatics, metabolomics, computational mass spectrometry, chemometrics. The degree should generally not be older than three years.

You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.
