PhD Studentship Up-conversion Detectors Based on Ppln Waveguides

Applications are invited for a PhD position in photonics to join University of Southampton, UK. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for 5 years in UK. Potential candidates should apply before May 31, 2020.

Our team of 20 researchers specialises in the development and manufacture of novel optoelectronic components for applications in quantum technology, integrated optical sensors, and laser optics. Working closely with our spin-out company, Covesion Ltd (www.covesion.com), we pride ourselves on delivering research from prototype to product and providing our students with a solid foundation for a career in photonics.

Dstl as part of the UK's Quantum Technology programme funds this PhD studentship. The project aims to develop a new class of quantum optical detectors for imaging in low-light environments, such as LIDAR for driverless cars and environmental monitoring of greenhouse gases. This will be achieved by up-converting photons from the 2-5 micron region to shorter wavelengths enabling detection by standard silicon based photodiodes and cameras.

The project will be laboratory focused, working with lasers and optical systems and our extensive cleanroom and machining facilities. The student will also benefit from regular interaction and site visits with Dstl staff.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Corin Gawith- Optical Engineering & Quantum Photonics Group, Email: corin.gawith@soton.ac.uk Tel: +44 (0) 2380 59 4522

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

:applications should be received no later than 31 May 2020 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.

Funding: full tuition plus, for UK students, an enhanced stipend of 18,000 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years.

Applications should be made online here selecting "PhD Optoelectronics (Full time)" as the programme. Please under the Topic or Field of Research.
