PhD Scholarship Position in Conversion of Forest-based Waste Products Using Photolysis

Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden is inviting excellent students to apply for a PhD position in nanotechnology. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for five years in Sweden. Applications are invited up to January 31, 2020.

This position would be located at the Chemical Engineering division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering department. The Division of Chemical Engineering includes two units: Chemical Reaction and Process Engineering; Forest Products and Chemical Engineering. We have a wide range of experience and work both experimentally and with modeling. We have a long tradition of working with both fundamental scientific questions and applied problems together with industry. This position is within the unit for Chemical Reaction and Process Engineering.

The advance of biorefineries, which decouple for example forestry raw materials into valuable bio-based chemicals and fuels, is central to minimize the use of fossil-based energy and the emission of CO . However, most fractionation processes operate at high temperatures and pressures, consuming extensive amount of energy. These harsh process conditions promote the formation of many different products, requiring additional energy-consuming separation steps. Furthermore, products with a great potential for the production of sustainable chemicals and fuels such as lignin are burned to produce heat instead of being valorized.

Focus of this research project is to develop a process to decouple foresty raw materials such as saw dust to produce bio-based materials and chemicals using photolysis. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with Sdra and Perstorp.

Major responsibilities

The research will involve the use of photoreactor and the characterization of wood-based materials and formed products. A combination of different experimental techniques will be used such as UV-Vis, GC-MS, NMR. Experimental measurements will be carried out in laboratory scale and in favorable cases even in situ. In summary, the position will involve the planning, design and analysis of an experimental program that can generate the knowledge building required to enable efficient conversion of forest-based waste products to bio-based chemicals and fuels.

The position will involve reporting current research results in both written and oral form as well as authoring scientific research publications. Also, it will include teaching at the undergraduate level or other duties corresponding up to 20% of working time.

Full-time temporary employment.The position is limited to a maximum of five years.


To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master’s level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits. Primarily in Chemical Engineering or Chemical Engineering within Physics or Chemistry. Any previous experience relevant for the described major responsibilities for this position would be considered as strong merits.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English.
