PhD Scholarship in Ultra-low-threshold Frequency Comb Generation in Algaas-on-insulator Platform

The Nanophotonic Devices Group at DTU Fotonik is seeking a PhD candidate for design and fabrication of ultra-high quality factor microresonators for . The preferred start date for this 3-year position is the 15th of April, 2020.

The position is funded by the European Commission's ERC starting grant REFOCUS 'Chip-scale Self-REFerenced Optical frequency Comb soUrceS'. The overall objective of the REFOCUS project is to develop a chip-scale, fully-integrated self-referenced optical frequency comb source system that finds applications in many different fields of science including metrology, spectroscopy, astronomy, microwave photonics and telecommunication. You will participate in the REFOCUS project team, which will include staff working on efficient on-chip frequency doubling, heterogeneous integration of nonlinear AlGaAs components and active components (lasers and detectors). Miniaturization of a self-referenced comb source has a strong socio-economic impact in numerous application fields. Although Kerr combs can be made on compact chips based on nonlinear parametric processes in microresonators, most of the Kerr comb generation relies on external bulky high-power lasers and amplifiers because of the high threshold requirement. In addition, self-referencing requires the on-chip generated comb has an octave span and a microwave repetition rate, which also imposes an even strict requirement on threshold power. Therefore a few-micro-watt-threshold comb is highly desired. You will make such a Kerr comb based on our recent developed ultra-efficient nonlinear AlGaAs-on-insulator platform [1-3]. All the chip fabrication will be performed in the DTU Nanolab cleanroom.

The goal of this project is to achieve a few-microwatt-level threshold coherent comb that can be used for on-chip self-referencing. You will be expected to Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree. Additionally, the candidate should have a background on integrated optics, a basic understanding of nonlinear optics, and experience with nano-fabrication.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU.
