PhD Scholarship in Sociology at University of Gothenburg

Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD position in sustainable development at University of Gothenburg. The funding allows successful candidate to work for four years. The deadline for applying is February 27, 2020.

The Department of Sociology and Work Science has over 100 employees, teachers, researchers, PhD-students and administrative staff. The department carries out research, education and collaboration in a number of areas. There is research on labour markets, working life, social movements, environmental policy, migration and sociology of emotions. Courses are offered in a range of fields such as sociology, work science, criminology and human resource management. The Department also has extensive commitment to several of the University’s educational programs, particularly in teacher education. Collaboration and development projects are conducted both in research and education with partners in the private and public sector.

The doctoral position is part of the research project The necessary and the possible: How social movements articulate, convey and negotiate visions of a fossil free and just future, funded by Formas (the Swedish research council for sustainable development). The project studies how social movements articulate, promote and negotiate visions of a future fossil free welfare society, as well as how citizens and politicians are affected by, and relate to, these visions. First, the project as a whole studies which visions are promoted by different groups and organizations within the climate movement, and how the movement negotiates priorities and strategies to influence politics and the public. How does the movement weigh what is regarded as necessary against what is seen as politically possible, and how does it balance demands for a total abolition of fossil fuels in relation to demands for a just and equal distribution of the costs of those demands? Second, the project investigates how these visions diffuse in society, with a focus on the public and on political elites. Researchers from four Swedish universities participate in the project, which is also involved in close collaboration with international research networks.

How are visions about a fossil free and just future negotiated, reformulated and complemented among climate movement activists? For example, how do NGOs internally negotiate what is necessary and what is possible in their political goals? How are conflicting ideas and values dealt with?

The PhD project is expected to contribute to answering these research questions primarily based on ethnographic field research. Individual studies within the PhD project may also involve qualitative and quantitative analysis of other types of data, such as survey studies of protest participants, individual interviews and focus group interviews. In order to facilitate interaction between the PhD project and the other studies within the research project as a whole, it needs to be designed to be reported in parts, preferably in the form of research articles in English.

The aim of the doctoral studentship is for the doctoral student to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to be able to conduct research autonomously within sociology or sociology with a specialization towards science and technology studies and to contribute to the development of knowledge within the discipline through the production of a scholarly thesis. Another aim for the doctoral student is to develop an ability to apply the acquired knowledge and skills within post-degree research or other professional work.

Postgraduate education amounts to four years of full-time studies and leads to a doctorate.

Anyone who is employed as a doctoral student should primarily devote themselves to their postgraduate education. However, a doctoral student may, to a limited extent, work with education, research and administration. Such work must not exceed 20 per cent of full working time before the doctorate is awarded.

Due to the nature of the research material, the applicant must have a good command of Swedish, both written and orally.

Applicants will be assessed based on their ability to benefit from the doctoral study program at the Department.

We are looking for a doctoral student with a special interest in qualitative methodology and observations studies. Experience of conducting qualitative interviews and doing statistical analysis is also a merit.

For this position a good command in Swedish is a requirement, due to the data, and a demonstrated good knowledge of written English is a merit.

-Papers, degree projects and other relevant works (maximum four works), which will be assessed on in terms of ability to formulate scientific problem and purpose, previous research and choice of theoretical perspective, methodology and implementation, theory integration, interpretation and conclusions as well as academic and linguistic presentation.

-A project draft, maximum 2000 words, in which the applicant present their research interest in relation to the stated assignments, discusses previous research and theories of relevance for the area, and outlines how the research questions can be answered. The project draft will be assessed on scientific relevance, demonstrated familiarity with previous and current research as well as feasibility within the framework of the PhD-education.

Upon admission to postgraduate education, you will be employed as a doctoral student. Regulations for employment as a doctoral student can be found in Regulation SFS 1993: 100. The first employment as a doctoral student may apply for a maximum of one year. The employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. A person may be employed as a doctoral student for a maximum of eight years. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of full-time postgraduate education for four years.

Salaries for doctoral students are regulated in a local agreement at the University.
