PhD Scholarship in Robust Sensor Integration in Connected Devices

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (DTU Mekanik) at The Technical University of Denmark has an open PhD position in the field of Robust Design. The project is integrated in the current research at the section of Engineering Design and Product Development (Conceptualization, Product-service systems, Robust Design and Modular product development) which focusses on the improvement of quality and efficiency of product development processes as carried out in an industrial context. This is achieved through analysis of industrial development work and by developing and improving systematic methods that support design professionals and development groups.

The project addresses the importance of mechanical variation for the development of connected devices with built-in sensors. The main research field is the development of methods and tools for an early robustness analysis of mechanical structures / assemblies, and the corresponding effect on the mechanical and electrical performance. In light of the immense advances in the field of smart, connected devices and sensor technology over the last decades, it is expected that the importance of integrated electronics in medical devices will grow significantly in the future. The project's purpose is therefore the development of a coherent Robust Design toolbox that supports the design of devices with built-in sensor systems and ensures their robust and reliable performance. This will require a deep integration of product development knowledge with a strong quantitative focus, e.g. the use of graph topologies, design space exploration, and optimization techniques, in order to unambiguously address the numerous interactions between the structural and electrical behavior of the device. Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree. Candidates are furthermore expected to be knowledgeable in the field of product development as well as mechanical design, including good analytical skills as well as knowledge of simulation tools, Design Space Exploration, and Optimisation techniques. A high motivation for research, experience with industrial collaboration, and communication / teamwork skills will be essential for a successful application. Excellent written and spoken English skills are mandatory. The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU.
