PhD Scholarship in Optical Levitation at University of Gothenburg

University of Gothenburg is offering PhD position in condensed matter physics. The funds for this fellowship are available for 4 years. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before January 13, 2020.

The Department of Physics at the University of Gothenburg is located on the main campus of Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, with approximately 80 employees. The communication routes are good both nationally and internationally. The research focuses within the fields of Atom- and Molecular Physics, Condensed Matter Physics and Spintronics, and Complex Systems and Biophysics and is performed in an international environment with extensive national and international collaborations. The education programs at the Department include Bachelor- and Master programs in Physics, physics teacher-training programs, as well as outreach courses in Physics aimed for the general public. Gothenburg Physics Centre is a close collaboration with four other departments within the Faculty of Science and Chalmers University of Technology, which creates an innovative environment for all researchers and students at the department.

The position will be placed in The laser spectroscopy research group (https://www.physics.gu.se/ english/research/laser-spectroscopy) lead by professor Dag Hanstorp. The research within the group includes the four research projects "laser spectroscopy of negative ions", "optical levitation", "lasers and spintronics" and "physics education research". The current position is within the field of optical levitation.

This Ph. D. position is part of the project "relativistic nanophotonics" which is a collaboration between researchers at Ume University and University of Gothenburg. The research within the framework of this position will during the first part be carried out at University of Gothenburg, while the latter part will be carried out at Ume University at the Relativistic Attosecond Physics Laboratory (REAL).

The aim with th eproject "relativistic nanophotonics" is to produce and study few-femtosecond relativistic electron bunches (1 fs = 10-15 s) by aiming an extremely intense laser pulse towards a nanoparticle held in an optical trap. The task of the holder of the position is to construct an optical trap in vacuum for nanoparticles which can be loaded 10 times per second. The optical trap including its vacuum chamber will be constructed at University of Gothenburg. It will first be tested using a femtosecond laser available in Gothenburg. Thereafter, the trap will be moved to the TW laser available at the REAL laboratory. The task of the holder of the position is then to install the trap at the laser facility and thereafter take part in the subsequent experiments in the field of relativistic nanophotonics in collaboration with researchers from Ume University.

1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, 2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or 3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. To meet the specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies, applicants must: (i) have a second-cycle (advanced-level) degree in a relevant* subject area in the natural sciences, or (ii) have completed studies for at least 60 higher education credits at a second-cycle level in relevant subject areas in the natural sciences, or (iii) have completed a corresponding programme of relevance to the planned third-cycle programme, in Sweden or in another country, or have equivalent qualifications. The specific entry requirements also include an acceptable command of spoken and written English. Guidelines for assessing English proficiency may include a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL test (or 213 on the TOEFL-CBT, or 79 on the TOEFL-iBT).

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for education on a doctoral level are given in SFS 1993:100. The selection among the applicants who fulfill the requirements for basic and special eligibility will be based on the ability to take up an education at the research level.

A new employment as a PhD student applies for a maximum of one year. The employment may be prolonged for up to two years at a time. The total employment period may not be longer than the equivalent of four years of full time doctoral studies.
