PhD Scholarship in Medical Science Biomarkers for Prediction-ophthalmology

International students are invited for a PhD scholarship in medical sciences at University of Gothenburg. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for four years in Sweden. The deadline for applying is January 13, 2020.

Project title: Identification of early factors that predict disease of the eye in preterm infants

The PhD educationin Medical Science comprisecarrying out a scientific project and completing at least 30 credits of courses at third-cycle level. The doctoral student must also write a scientific compilation thesis or monograph corresponding to at least 120 credits. For more information about third-cycle studies at Sahlgrenska Academy, see https://medarbetarportalen.gu.se/sahlgrenskaakademin/forskarutbildning/languageId=100001

Project: Preterm birth is associated with abnormal development of many organ systems. Preterm birth is the single most common cause of death and morbidity in the perinatal period, which affects 15 million infants each year. Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a severe and potentially disabling threat to prematurely born children. The diagnosis can only be done by eye examinations that are both stressful for the infants and resource-consuming for the healthcare system and should therefore be kept to a minimum. A large amount of clinical and laboratory information is already produced in the course of care but not yet used systematically to guide the planning of diagnostic and intervention procedures for ROP. Studying biomarkers in preterm infants is complicated since sampling for ethical and clinical reasons must be kept to a minimum, so new ways of salvaging already taken samples need to be established.

In order to optimize the availability of study material and examine the value of biomarker for ROP diagnosis, the doctoral student project will contain the following parts: 1. Evaluate if a Neonatal Biobank has beneficial effects for research in preterm infants 2. Identify and quantify variants of biomarkers in blood from extremely preterm infants and implement findings into a system for prediction of ROP 3. Map the function of biomarkers in important physiological processes involved in development of preterm morbidities The scientific work will be carried out in a research environment with extensive experience in research in neonatology, ophthalmology communication and leadership in care organization. The project may result in an improved information basis for clinical decision-making for ROP diagnosis. The project is designed with particular regard to clinical needs. This can lead to an improvement in the care by a reduction of stressful and resource-intensive eye examinations by replacing them with by laboratory tests. Third-cycle studies are equivalent to four year full-time and lead to a Degree of Doctor. Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their studies. Those appointed to doctoral studentships may, however, work to a limited extent with educational tasks, research and administration (departmental duties). Before a PhD degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20 per cent of a full-time post.

To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements.

for third-cycle studiesif he or she:

1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification 2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or 3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad for third-cycle studiesin Medical Science if he or she: has successfully completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies

In selecting between applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements, their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies shall be taken into account. The assessment shall attach particular importance to documented qualifications for:

– specific knowledge and skills within the subject area and related research fields – experience of scientific theory and relevant research methodology – scientific analysis and presentation verified through thesis, degree project, scientific journals or the like. Documented experience within neonatal care and of relevant methodological skills, such as ultra-sensitive and multiplex immunological assays and biochemical extraction techniques, are meritorious. Experience in quality systems and work processes aimed at improvement research studies and practical experience of method development is particularly meritorious.

After admission tothird-cyclestudies you will be appointedtodoctoral studentship. Regulations for employment of doctoral students are given in SFS 1993:100. The initial appointment may apply for no longer than one year. An appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. A person may beappointed to a doctoral studentship for a total ofeight years. The total employment period may, however, not exceed the time corresponding to full-time third-cycle study for four years.

Location: Sahlgrenska Academy, Institute ofHealth and Care Sciences.Extent:100%. First day of employment: as agreed.

Salaries for doctoral students are regulated in a local agreement at the University.
