PhD Scholarship in Medical Science Mental Health of School-aged Children

Outstanding international students are invited to apply for a PhD scholarship in medical sciences at University of Gothenburg. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for 3 years in Sweden. Applications should be sent before January 08, 2020.

The Institute of Medicineis located at theFaculty of Health Care Sciences at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg. The Instituteemphasises intersectoral collaborations with both health care and business sectors. We believe scientific success is best achieved through interdisciplinary collaboration. The doctoral student position is placed at the School of Public Health and Community Medicine. Our aim is to improve public health through innovative research and education of health care staff, including future leaders. An important part of our work is research for policy and practice through cross-sectoral collaborations.

Project title: Exploring self-reported and observed stress and mental health among adolescents in Sweden - focusing on school environment and socioeconomic inequalities

The PhD educationin Medical Science comprisecarrying out a scientific project and completing at least 30 credits of courses at third-cycle level. Project: Thedoctoral studentwill work within a joint project of University of Gothenburg and the Swedish Public Health Agency, in a dynamic research environment where close collaborations between mental health, somatic health and socioeconomics occur. The purpose is to analyse mental health problems of adolescents, with a focus on socioeconomic factors at individual, family and neighbourhood level.

An emphasis will be on quantitative analysis with data from the Sahlgrenska Academy's project STARS (Study of Adolescence Resilience and Stress) and the Swedish Public Health Agency's project Health Behaviour in School Aged Children (HBSC). STARS has since 2015 collected mental health data of adolescents through questionnaires and physical examinations. STARS is a unique longitudinal study with baseline examination at the age of 13 years, three follow-up examinations at ages of 15, 18 and 23 years. The Public Health Agency is leading the work of the Swedish part of HBSC, a collaboration within WHO Europe for monitoring trends of adolescents' health behaviour.

The successful candidate will contribute to our efforts to better understand how adolescents' self-rated and measurable health is associated with factors such as income and economic segregation. You are expected to independently develop new ideas and interdisciplinary collaborations, especially in the area of economics.

Third-cycle studies are equivalent to four year full-time and lead to a Degree of Doctor. Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their studies. Those appointed to doctoral studentships may, however, work to a limited extent with educational tasks, research and administration. Before a PhD degree has been awarded,duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20 per cent of a full-time post.

To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements.

for third-cycle studiesif he or she:

1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification 2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or 3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad for third-cycle studiesin Medical Science if he or she: has successfully completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies

In selecting between applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements, their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies shall be taken into account. The assessment shall attach particular importance to documented qualifications for:

– specific knowledge and skills within the subject area and related research fields – experience of scientific theory and relevant research methodology – scientific analysis and presentation verified through thesis, degree project, scientific journals or the like. Documented experienceof intersectoral work within global public health and related theories in economics is of value.Excellent communication skills with capabilities to independently work in an interdisciplinary settingare desirable.

After admission tothird-cyclestudies you will be appointedtodoctoral studentship. Regulations for employment of doctoral students are given in SFS 1993:100. The initial appointment may apply for no longer than one year. An appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. A person may beappointed to a doctoral studentship for a total ofeight years. The total employment period may, however, not exceed the time corresponding to full-time third-cycle study for four years.

Salaries for doctoral students are regulated in a local agreement at the University.
