PhD Scholarship in Computational Design of Eletrocatalysts for The Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The Sectionfor Atomic Scale Materials Modellingat DTU Energy, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), invites applications for a PhD scholarship on computational discovery and design of new materials for the electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction. is part of the Villum Center for the Science of Sustainable Fuels and Chemicals (V-SUSTAIN), which brings together researchers from the Technical University of Denmark, Stanford University, University of Copenhagen, and University of Southern Denmark, among others.

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) are promising sustainable technologies for a range of applications including transportation and auxiliary power units. Traditional PEMFCs utilizes platinum based catalysts at the cathode to facilitate the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction, which significantly contributes to the cost of PEMFC. Consequently, research and development activities have focused on replacing platinum based catalysts with catalysts based on abundant and nonprecious elements such as oxides or carbon based catalysts.

The successful candidate will use Density Functional Theory (DFT) to elucidate fundamental reaction mechanisms and active sites for the electrochemical reduction of O on novel catalyst structures and compositions such as nonprecious catalysts. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with experimental groups in the Villum Center V-SUSTAIN and linked to other ongoing computational projects in the section working on electrocatalyst design and materials modelling.

Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree. We favour candidates with a degree in physics, chemistry or materials science or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a master’s degree in engineering. Experience with computational/theoretical physics, chemistry or related areas are an advantage.
