PhD Position in Social Anthropology at University of Gothenburg

University of Gothenburg, Sweden has an opening PhD position in anthropology. The funds for this fellowship are available for four years. This position is closed on February 17, 2020.

At the School of Global Studies, research in Social Anthropology is conducted on a host of themes related to the cultural and social phenomena in today's globalized world. Topics include climate change, migration, religion, gender, cultural heritage, sustainability and comsuption, health and indigenous peoples. Traditionally, extended periods of fieldwork and participatory observation have been hallmarks of the discipline. Its research methods explore how the practices and experiences of people's everyday lives interplay with overarching social processes.

During the last decade, the public discourse on diversity and integration has become increasingly polarized. Political debate as well as research have reinforced an image of a deeply segregated society where integration is a fundamental problem. Less noted are the everyday transformations that have been taking place. In many social arenas, diversity is already a part of everyday life. Despite the strong interest in integration, we know little about how this new diversity is understood and practiced. This lack of knowledge is mirrored in the want of a concise political language for managing a society characterized by both deep segregation and everyday diversity. The aim of the project is to examine when and how practices and ideas relating to ethnicity, culture and religion are made relevant, and to analyze how these forms of identity are interwoven with other forms. The study departs from these categories and their importance for social interaction at workplaces, and explores how social practices may wave them into new, more complex identities. The doctoral student will carry out fieldwork at two of the selected workplaces and be responsible for the analysis of this material.

The purpose of undertaking doctoral studies is to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for conducting independent research within Social Anthropology. This position consists of one year of coursework and culminates in the production of a dissertation which makes a significant and original contribution to the research field. The knowledge and skills that are acquired should be applicable to postdoctoral research or other professional work. The doctoral position begins in August 2020 and covers four years (full-time equivalent, fixed term). The doctoral candidate may undertake departmental duties corresponding to up to 20% of a full-time position. If they do so, the duration of the appointment will be extended accordingly. The appointment covers tuition costs plus salary as an employee of the University of Gothenburg. The candidate is expected to work in the project team in Gothenburg, and start both course work and project related research during the first year.

Applicants must fulfil both general and specific entry requirements.

An applicant meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle studies if they have obtained (Higher Education Ordinance Ch. 7, Sec.

1. a degree at the second-cycle level,

2. at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 must be at the second-cycle level, or

3. largely equivalent knowledge in other ways in Sweden or abroad.

An applicant meets the specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies if they have obtained (Higher Education Ordinance Ch.7, Sec.40) at least 90 higher education credits in the field of Social Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology or Ethnology. In order to carry out the fieldwork, the candidate needs to be fluent in a Scandinavian language.

Applicants will be assessed based on the general and specific eligibility requirements and their estimated ability to benefit from the study programme.

1. A proposal/introduction letter (max 2,000 words plus references) that formulates some preliminary ideas of how the applicant envisions that his/her PhD work could contribute to the research project in question.

2. A Master’s thesis, academic papers and/or other relevant works. These will be used to assess the applicant's ability to formulate and delimit research tasks and analyse and present research results, as well as his/her familiarity with and handling of methodological and theoretical issues.

5. Interviews will be held with shortlisted applicants.

The applicant's skills, experience, creativity and excellence in research are also assessed on the basis of the points above.

Decisions on the shortlist will be made at the latest in April and final decisions in May 2020.

The Head of Department is in charge of all admission decisions at the third-cycle level. This decision cannot be appealed.
