A 3-year PhD position in the field of molecular infection biology is available in the section for Protein Science & Signaling Biology at the Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (DTU Bioengineering).

As a successful applicant, you will work with a team of postdocs and PhD students in close collaboration with national and international collaborators to unravel the molecular basis of how influenza virus crosses the species barrier from pig to human. You can read more about us here

You will be a part of FluZooMark, an influenza One Health Center focused on determining factors that influences the capability of influenza viruses to cross species barriers and be the cause of zoonotic transmission and possibly future pandemics. The center involves leading researchers with unique knowledge about virology and immunology in the field of influenza. The center is an international collaboration funded by the Novo Nordisk foundation. Partners in the center are; University of Copenhagen, Statens Serum Institut, Technical University of Denmark, and St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital, Memphis, USA.

Influenza A virus infections have great impact on human and animal health and welfare. There is a profound lack of knowledge of host range barriers of swine influenza viruses. Thus, more knowledge on molecular determinants of host range restriction of new influenza A virus strains discovered in animals are urgently needed.

The overall objective of the project is to identify innate and adaptive host immune factors important for swine influenza viruses to cross the species barrier and infect humans. Furthermore, this project seek to increase the basic understanding of molecules involved in the orchestration of an efficient antiviral immune response, which at the moment is very sparse. Such results will contribute to our understanding of the nature and emergence of virulent influenza A virus in humans and hopefully form the basis for future disease control based on improved vaccines and antiviral therapeutics.

As a PhD-student enrolled at DTU and employed in the frame of FluZooMark, you must be willing to travel. All PhDs must attend a mandatory research stay in the laboratory of one of the other FluZooMark partners.

You will work with key inflammatory and immune factors related to antiviral immune response and with different methods to quantify protein levels, gene expression, antibody titers and activation of virus-specific T cell populations after influenza infection and vaccination.

Further, your tasks as a PhD Student enrolled at DTU Bioengineering are to: independent scientific project, actively participate in PhD courses, participate in international congresses, teach and disseminate your research, co-supervise master and bachelor students within your field and finally write scientific articles and finalize your PhD thesis.

Candidates should have a master’s degree in molecular biomedicine, biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology, biology, chemistry, microbiology, or equivalent.

Personal qualifications are strong motivation, commitment and enthusiasm. A good standard of oral and written English is important.
