PhD Position in Electrochemical Compositional and Crystallographic Analysis of Solid Oxide Cells Inside A Transmission Electron Microscope

We have an available PhD position in the Department of Energy Conversion and Storage (DTU Energy), Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Our research project will yield unique new knowledge by making it possible to directly observe the microstructural, compositional and crystallographic evolution of an operating solid oxide electrochemical cell with nanoscale resolution in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) while combining this with electrochemical characterization, using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).

You will work with layered model solid oxide cells prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Part of the work involves thinning and mounting the model cells on a MEMS chip, which will be used for heating and biasing the cell inside the microscope. Commercial chips are available, but some of the work will target the optimization of the MEMS chip for these particular electrochemical TEM experiments. The work with chip optimization will take place both in Denmark, in the clean room facilities at DTU, and in Canada, in collaboration with Norcada, a leading company in the fabrication of MEMS devices for scientific applications, and with the University of Toronto. Robust procedures for mounting and connecting such model cells will be developed. After establishing these procedures, the work will focus on conducting in situ electrochemical TEM experiments on model solid oxide cells in our environmental TEM (ETEM) microscope.

You will be part of the team for our 5-years ERC project "High-temperature Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Transmission electron microscopy on energy materials" (HEIST).

Candidates should hold a Master's degree (or equivalent), preferably in chemistry, physics, nanoscience, or a materials science-related discipline.
