PhD in Radiology at University of Cambridge

University of Cambridge, UK is inviting excellent candidates to apply for a PhD position in computer science. This position is available for 5 years. Applications are invited up to January 06, 2020.

Applications are invited for two 3-4 year PhD studentship starting in October 2020 or earlier at the Department of Radiology, University of Cambridge, funded by Cancer Research UK and The Lundbeck Foundation (Denmark) respectively.

These studentships are part of an exciting programme to image metabolism in cancer patients using a new technique called hyperpolarised carbon-13 MRI. The technique is a novel method to non-invasively detect tissue metabolism using MRI, allowing a breakdown product of glucose to be imaged in real-time, as well as downstream metabolic products such as lactate. The images generated probe tumour metabolism at unprecedented sensitivity and allow metabolic heterogeneity to be studied in ways not previously possible. Cambridge has pioneered this technology over the last 5 years creating a translational research platform to explore potential clinical applications for this technique. The research programme will investigate patients with renal and brain tumours and will correlate the imaging findings with tissue derived at surgery and patient outcome. A major question of the grant is how this novel metabolic imaging method can be combined with other approaches (e.g. tissue sampling, tumour genomics and circulating tumour DNA to better stratify patients and to determine the most appropriate therapy for an individual patient). The successful candidate will integrate with a highly multidisciplinary team of scientists and clinicians as part of a translational cancer imaging team. We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic scientists with a degree in biological sciences, physical sciences, computer science or medicine to join our research group to help develop this exciting new field of research.

We are advertising two PhD studentship: the first is a Cancer Research UK (CRUK)-funded studentship to develop this imaging in renal cancer. The second is a Lundbeck Foundation-funded (Denmark) studentship to develop the technique in the brain and brain tumours in collaboration with Aarhus University.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3-4 years.
