Assistant Professor in Mathematical Foundations and Theoretical Computer Science for Ai

Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden has an opening PhD position in theoretical computer science. This position is available for four years. This position is closed on February 10, 2020.

Information about the department

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a joint department at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, with activities on two campuses in the city of Gothenburg. The department has around 260 employees and enrolls a number of PhD students from more than 30 countries. Our research has a wide span, from theoretical foundations to applied systems development. We provide high quality education at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and graduate levels, offering over 120 courses each year. We also have extensive national and international collaborations with academia, industry and society. For more information about the department, see

The Data Science and AI division

The Data Science and AI division is a growing division within the department. Thedivision has a tradition of strong research in classical areas such as algorithms, optimization and analysis of randomized algorithms. In recent years, it has made several strategic recruitments in modern machine learning and built up a broad expertise in areas such as kernel methods, probabilistic models, sparsity inducing methods, unsupervised methods, generative models and reinforcement learning. It has close collaboration with machine learning researchers in sister departments at Chalmers including Mathematics and Electrical Engineering.

The division has a solid network of collaborators, both academic and industrial, within and outside of Gothenburg, the home of Chalmers. We provide many courses in these areas, and are the main contributors to the Data Science and AI Master's program at Chalmers as well as the Data Science Master's program at GU. The division also offers courses in mathematical modelling, optimization and related areas.

Specific Subject Description

Your area of research lies within mathematical foundations of AI centered in theoretical computer science. There have been some exciting recent advances in understanding the generalization power of deep networks based in statistical and optimization theory. The research is intended to focus on advancing this fundamental understanding of the power of deep neural networks and related foundational issues in modern AI such as the expressivity of deep generative models, all grounded in rigorous statistical/probabilistic and optimization techniques.

Package offer

This position is financed by The Wallenberg Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) ( which is a major effort from a private foundation to nationally fund AI research in Sweden and offers very attractive conditions for research with a generous starting package. Closely connected to this position is also the Chalmers Centre for AI Research (CHAIR), which is a Chalmers effort to ensure strength in the AI area.

The position includes a starting package with one PhD student in your area of choice. It also includes four postdoc years (typically to be used for two postdocs each with a two year appointment).

Major responsibilities

Your primary duty as assistant professor is to perform your own research, generally as a member of a research group. The position has very attractive conditions for research, with70% of full-time dedicated for research as well as fullfillment of requirements for achieving tenure. The remaining time is shared between25% teaching (primarily on the undergraduate and master’s levels) and 5% management.

Full-time temporary employment for a maximum of four years with tenure track. Progress will be assessed after two years. You are expected to achieve associate professor expertise within four years, at which point your position will then become permanent.

You should have a research profile in theoretical and mathematical foundations of machine learning and related mathematical areas. For example, you should have a background in areas such as statistical theory of machine learning, concentration inequalities and other probabilistic techniques, large scale optimization and dynamical systems analysis of stochastic processes (via ODEs and PDEs). You should have published in major AI/ML venues such as NIPS, ICML, AISTATS, AAAI and KDD. Willingness to engage with high impact application areas such as Life Sciences, Energy, Education etc. will be considered as an advantage and experience of cooperation with industrial partners is meritorious.

Main qualifications

- PhD degree in a relevant field (computer science, mathematics, electrical engineering, physics or similar) not older than 7 years.

- Post-doctoral appointment or the equivalent at another university, institute or organization than where the candidate was a doctoral student is considered an additional merit.

Additional qualifications Documented experience of collaborating in national and international arenas.

- Published research in the leading journals of the field.

- Documented pedagogical skills (e.g. through teaching materials, experience of teaching or course evaluations).

- Experience of supervision on masters and PhD-levels

- Documented experience to attract external funding

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
