3 Year PhD Studentship in Enabling Next Generation Additive Manufacturing

Title:Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) of multi-materials using novel drop on demand "Metal Jetting"

Project description:The successful applicant will work on an exciting research programme that has the potential to move metal 3D printing beyond its current limits. 3D Printing of conductive materials has attracted the attention of researchers worldwide for the manufacturing flexibility these techniques offer. In view of the need for a better and more efficient metal AM technology, and as a result of extensive collaborative research between our Centre and Canon Production Printing, a new method for creating three-dimensional solid objects by depositing molten metal has been developed and is now exclusively available in Centre for Additive Manufacturing (CfAM) laboratories at the University of Nottingham. This "metaljet" printing process works by laying down each voxel of a desired digital object in form of liquid metal droplets and it is envisaged that this technology will open up a number of exciting opportunities including, but not limited to, the fabrication of novel electrical conductive componentry, new generation 3D smart devices and structural multi-functional components.

The aim of this research is to use this novel droplet-on-demand technology to jet two dissimilar materials within the same build volume to realise multi-material printing of metals for multi-functionality. During the programme continuous or graded structures of desirable metals (and alloys) will be investigated. Based on the findings, the research will progress towards the characterisation and comparison of the physical and mechanical properties of the printed parts to those properties found in articles formed by conventional metal AM techniques. This will require the complete understanding of the MetalJet printing process as well as the compatibility of dissimilar materials within the printed structure. Of particular importance will be the study of the interface between the different material droplets as this determines the ultimate success of the printed structures.

The person appointed will work as part of a dynamic interdisciplinary team focussed on developing cutting edge polymer technologies as part of the CfAM. The CfAM is a large interdisciplinary group active in the area of Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing. Comprising of around 100 academics, post-doctoral researchers and PhD students, it is one of the largest research centres for additive manufacturing and 3D printing worldwide. The Centre engages with a broad range of academics from across the UK and a significant number of industrial partners to deliver on an industrially prioritised research agenda - this particular project is part of a large, collaborative EPSRC Programme Grant looking at Next Generation Additive Manufacturing (EP/P031684/1).

Applicants should have, or expect to obtain a first-class or 2:1 degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Physics or a science related discipline. A-level (or equivalent) in Chemistry would be beneficial
