PhD Scholarship Position on Modeling of Biocomposite Processing

A PhD scholarship in sustainable development is available at Chalmers University of Technology. This position is available for five years. Applications should be sent before December 15, 2019.

Information about the project

Eco-friendly materials and products are important ingredients in a society for sustainable development. The Cellulose Biocomposites project is a multidisciplinary effort exploring new opportunities for nanostructured cellulose materials. Research towards new materials and processing concepts is performed, including a sustainability perspective. Participating universities include KTH Royal Inst of Technology, Stockholm, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg and Lule Univ of Technology. The goals are new material concepts and knowledge towards better performance, new functionalities and eco-friendly attributes. Biomaterials are a critical ingredient in the context of overarching societal efforts to increase the use of renewable materials. Therefore, the use of polymer with natural fiber reinforcements is expected to increase significantly. A current drive for polymer biocomposites is to maximize the use of renewable content in mass production systems. However, the full potential of highly filled biocomposites cannot be reached without the development of dedicated processing components.

Major responsibilities

In this framework, the PhD position will focus on the development of methodologies and procedures for material characterization, process modeling and optimization of processing flows, with a focus on extrusion. The project represents a strong industrial drive through a Stora Enso – Chalmers cooperation. The renewable materials company, Stora Enso develops and produces solutions based on wood and biomass for a range of industries and applications worldwide.

The position will be based at the Division of Engineering Materials, Department of Industrial and Materials Science at Chalmers working in close cooperation with the R&D team at Stora Enso.

Full-time temporary employment.The position is limited to a maximum of five years which includes teaching duties for 20% of the time.

Qualifications

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master’s level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field. The ideal candidate will have a background in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science or related fields. Candidates with a background in fluid mechanics or polymer engineering with a desire to develop both experimental and basic numerical (CFD) skills are particularly encouraged to apply.

The project will comprise basic rheological characterization, processing and in-line characterization, application CFD techniques for the modeling of the processing flows and their experimental validation.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
