Project: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterized by underweight due to starvation, refusal of gaining weight and a distorted body image. AN is highly feared owing to profound impact on mental and physical state. The etiology is multifaceted, and genetic factors explain more than half of the variance. Daughters of women with a history of AN have a tenfold increased risk of developing AN and are considered a high-risk group.

Aims: To investigate the mechanisms behind AN by exploring premorbid neuropsychological traits and biomarkers in children at high risk. Workplan: 50 girls, 6 – 11 years old, with a mother with a history of AN undergo IQ-evaluation, and tests pertaining to flexibility, and social competence. The PhD student administers the neuropsychological tests. The mothers are interviewed/complete questionnaires regarding the child. The girls undergo MRI of the brain. The PhD student is trained in interpretation of MRI data. Blood samples (appetite hormones, inflammatory markers) are collected. A comparison group of age-matched girls undergoes the same assessments.

The PhD student is part of an established eating disorder research group with translational, regional, national and international collaborations. The overall training objectives are to introduce the appointee to research methods, scientific reasoning and ethical considerations, and to supervise the PhD student in terms of interpretation of data and writing manuscripts. The PhD student is surrounded by a group of renowned scientists representing clinical and neuroscientific expertise. The PhD student is trained through regular meetings with the supervisors and through seminars. Presenting research data at international conferences will be encouraged. Third-cycle studies are equivalent to four year full-time and lead to a Degree of Doctor. Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their studies.
