PhD Scholarship in Medical Science Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine

University of Gothenburg, Sweden is inviting applicants to apply for a PhD position in molecular biology. The funding allows successful candidate to work for four years. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before December 03, 2019.

Project title: Mechanisms of bone regeneration associated with bioceramics

The PhD educationin Medical Science comprisecarrying out a scientific project and completing at least 30 credits of courses at third-cycle level. The doctoral student must also write a scientific compilation thesis or monograph corresponding to at least 120 credits. For more information about third-cycle studies at Sahlgrenska Academy, see

Project: The rehabilitation of patients after major trauma and after cancer treatment often requires the use of implants and prosthetics. In such instances, the regeneration of new tissues is a prerequisite for structural and functional restitution.Novel, sustainable clinical implant solutions require a fundamental knowledge of the mechanisms which determine successful implant-tissue interfaces and functional performance. The doctoral project is addressing a central issue within the field of regenerative medicine: is it possible to regenerate new tissue using a material with specific, designed properties? The projects aims to determine the biological mechanisms for the process whereby novel bioceramics can stimulate new bone formation in defects. State-of-the-art material titanium is used as a control. On the basis of performed pilot experiments which have provided interesting results, we will study the regeneration of bone in bone defects as well as details of bone formation in non-osseous soft tissue sites (osteoinduction) induced by the materials. Our experimental approach is to acquire temporal and spatial information in vivo on the migration, distribution and cell-cell communication of key cells associated with systematically modified bioceramic materials.

The doctoral project consists of a step-wise introduction of experimental in vivo models in bone and soft tissues. Similarly, the step-wise introduction of morphological, ultrastructural and cell and molecular technques will be an important learning outcome. The partnership with expertise in materials science will provide the student with a good introduction to interdisciplinary biomaterials research. The doctoral student will be a member of the Thomsen research group at the Department of Biomaterials ( The department is a global leader in osseointegration and has contributed to the clinical introduction of multiple implant and prosthetic solutions together with material scientists, clinicians and medical device companies. Third-cycle studies are equivalent to four year full-time and lead to a Degree of Doctor. Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their studies. Those appointed to doctoral studentships may, however, work to a limited extent with educational tasks, research and administration (departmental duties). Before a PhD degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20 per cent of a full-time post.

To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements.

for third-cycle studiesif he or she:

1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification 2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or 3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad for third-cycle studiesin Medical Science if he or she: has successfully completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies

In selecting between applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements, their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies shall be taken into account. The assessment shall attach particular importance to documented qualifications for:

– specific knowledge and skills within the subject area and related research fields – experience of scientific theory and relevant research methodology – scientific analysis and presentation verified through thesis, degree project, scientific journals or the like. Documented experiencein morphological and cell and molecular biology techniques is a merit,as well asexperience in in-vivo experiments, immunohistochemistry, qPCR, in situ hybridization and other tools of cell and molecular biology. Accuracy and the abilities to cooperate and to take own initiatives are important qualities.

After admission tothird-cyclestudies you will be appointedtodoctoral studentship. Regulations for employment of doctoral students are given in SFS 1993:100. The initial appointment may apply for no longer than one year. An appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. A person may beappointed to a doctoral studentship for a total ofeight years. The total employment period may, however, not exceed the time corresponding to full-time third-cycle study for four years.

Location: Sahlgrenska Academy, Institute of Clinical Sciences, Department ofBiomaterials.Extent:100%. First day of employment: as agreed.

Salaries for doctoral students are regulated in a local agreement at the University.
